Luna was generally a happy and bright girl, even during the worst times. She knew it, and knew that some people thought her odd for being that way. It was just that she always had so much to be thankful for and there was always something beautiful to cheer her up, even when she was prone to fits of melancholy. Sometimes, though, the melancholy got to be a bit much- and that was when she’d join her father on the couch and they’d look at pictures of Mum and plan vacations to Sweden, daydreaming about the day they finally found the Crumple-Horned Snorcack.
In their letters back and forth so far, and during the home visit they had enjoyed, Luna and her father had decided to go on vacation after the NEWT exams were over. The last year had been traumatic for both of them, to say the least, and the summer had been too busy with rebuilding lives, homes and friendships, that there hadn’t been much time to relax. Luna and Xeno wrote each other back and forth a couple times a week, sometimes only one or two sentences, along the lines of ‘Perhaps Bulgaria?’ and the other would respond with ideas about Bulgaria they found in their respective libraries. Her dad had always been her closest friend, and Luna found herself looking forward to the summer, even though there was much to still be enjoyed during the school year. The letters and planning had become a welcome distraction from her color-coded notes and brainstorming sessions about her club.
So it was Sunday morning that had Luna feeling a bit homesick as she sat in her favorite spot by the large window in the Ravenclaw tower, looking out towards the grounds. She hadn’t been lying when she told her friends that she loved being back at the castle, and that she was looking forward to building a “new normal,” as she liked to call it, but it didn’t stop her from feeling homesick like any other student. She missed her father making eggs and gurdyroot juice in particular, and laying in her bed enjoying the mural that she painted with Dean. She wanted to pour over texts about far away lands with her father as they planned a new excursion, and to get his opinion on all of her ideas for her club.
Luna shook her head and realized she must have missed breakfast. She couldn’t sit here thinking all day, as hard as it might be to get up and do anything when all she really wanted to do was daydream. She forced herself to stand, and stretched her arms above her head, knowing what she’d do instead today. At least, for the next few hours. She took the stairs slowly up to her room, to find Demetri just waking up on her bed, stretching like she had just done. She scratched him behind his ears and stepped out of her pajamas, finding a clean uniform and robes to put on. “I think I’ll brush my hair,” she told him. It was something she didn’t do often, but the feeling of the brush was comforting and reminded her that Draco was fond of her, which was always a nice feeling. It also appeared that she didn’t get as many stares when she bothered to brush her hair, but that might have been coincidental. When she was done, she gathered her paints and some large sheets of parchment, taking her bundle downstairs to a small table in the common room with Demetri not far behind her.
Before an hour was up, she cast a drying charm on the new posters, and decided to distribute them to the other common rooms and the notice board in the Great Hall, like Professor McGonagall said she could. She returned shortly to her tower to put one on their notice board, and stepped back, admiring her handiwork.
