Narcissa walked down the street toward Madam Malkin's, keeping near the buildings to avoid most of the drizzle. She knew she should have been used to the idea of it raining on her birthday by now, but she could never help but be disappointed every year she woke up to flat gray clouds. New robes for her party on Saturday would cheer her up, she knew, so as she walked she started thinking about cut and color.

She didn't recognize the young man in the hooded shirt until she was almost passing him on the sidewalk. "Oh, Mr. Potter," she said in surprise. "Good afternoon."

It wasn't often that people other than his professors addressed him as Mr. Potter, and he glanced up, looking around and seeing Mrs. Malfoy. Even more surprising -- eeing her in the first place, and then her acknowledging him.

"Er," he stopped walking and continued with, "Hullo, Mrs. Malfoy." It was all he had at the moment, not that he'd have had better luck with more time. What did you say to Narcissa Malfoy? The simple answer, six months ago, would have been to say nothing and keep walking. Things were a bit more complicated now.

Harry looked a bit uncomfortable, but Narcissa supposed she had rather caught him off-guard. "Mr. Malfoy and I are looking forward to seeing you and Miss Granger on Saturday," she said, smiling at him. "How are NEWT studies going?" she asked politely. It never hurt to be friendly, especially not to the likes of Harry Potter.

And now she was smiling at him. Harry smiled in return, slightly warily, wondering if she was alright, or if she'd mistaken him for some other 'Mr. Potter' whom she actually liked. True, she had saved his life in the forest, and he more grateful than he knew how to tell her.

"Oh. Er, Yeah. Thanks for inviting us, it was ..." Surprising? "Really nice of you. We're looking forward to it."

He ought to stop trying to figure her out, he supposed. Maybe she was only being polite, nothing more. "Classes are going alright. I'm getting used to the schedule again. Erm, how are you?"
