"That sounds like a fine idea," Narcissa said as she watched Lucius pick at his supper. "Though of course, in order to have dessert you need to finish your meal," she gently chided, the mother in her unable to let him ignore his vegetables. She smiled to lessen the sting, but she was honestly worried for his health when he was so stubborn about his eating habits.

"Which reminds me, I should work out with Cook the menu for my birthday," she said, giving Lucius a sideways glance as she sipped her wine. Did he already have something planned? It was always an awkward question to ask. She had started thinking about a guest list but didn't want to step on his toes if he had something specific in mind.

"I... yes, yes, of course. A menu. And I suppose it would include whitefish and steamed greens for myself," he muttered under his breath. As much as he missed the rich butter-based sauces, thick, starchy breads, and caramelized desserts, he really couldn't complain too much about his standard fare these days. At least it was far and above what they had been serving him in Azkaban.

"I was going to talk to you about that. What you'd like to do. I don't know how well our...friends... would feel like celebrating at this point in time, but I don't hesitate to say that I would not miss this opportunity to dote on my lovely wife." Lucius smiled, doing his best to lay that charm on as thick as possible.

"I don't know how many of our... friends would be available anyway," Narcissa replied. "But I was thinking about a dinner party. Perhaps dancing if there are enough guests. It might be a good opportunity to invite some people that we wouldn't normally. Like that Granger girl Draco seems to have taken up with. And Andromeda, and Fleur Weasley. In the spirit of goodwill and all that." She tried to sound offhand about it, but she truly did miss having her house full of merrymaking. Though Lucius might be right about people not being ready for a celebration.

"Or," she smirked at him over the lip of her glass, "my charming husband could take his lovely wife out some place nice. Maybe make a long weekend of it. I can't remember the last time we went away together."

"I would like to take you out somewhere. I would love to take you away to the south of Spain. To take you to the beach where we could hire a yacht and dance in time with the waves," Lucius said with a charming smile. "However, I'm afraid it's unlikely I'll be allowed to leave the area, even to celebrate one of the most important anniversaries in my life ( ... )

"Now there's a tempting option," Narcissa replied. "If you could get the day off from volunteering..." They might not have to get dressed at all, and a whole day's worth of naked Lucius was a very tempting option, indeed.

"Oh, and I've also been thinking that we should hire a new gardener or groundskeeper to get things properly in order, prepare for the spring. Perhaps a NEWT student in Herbology would be willing... What do you think?"

"Mmm. Gardener would be good. I think the rose hedges need some help, as do the rhododendron around on the east side. And then there's the damage to the Southern gardens. I was thinking we might do well to raze what is there and plant an orchard in its stead."

Lucius sliced up the broccoli until it was in tiny pieces, then mixed it in with some of his favorite hot chutney he had the house elves serve him. If he had to eat the vile plant, at least he didn't have to taste it.

"And as far as your birthday is concerned, as tempting as it would be to keep you in our bed all day, entertaining you in ways that are far to inappropriate to discuss at the dinner table, I believe socially, it might behoove us to entertain. The elves ought to be up to the task, and as long as my glucose levels are in line, I should feel up to being the perfect host."

Inappropriate for the table? Narcissa raised an eyebrow at Lucius, remembering what they had done on this table the first night he came home. "I think it would be a smart move," Narcissa said, covering her blush by taking another sip of her wine. "And I'm sure the elves remember, though it has been a long time." Hm, she'd need a new dress, as well.

"I'll write Professor Sprout and see if she can recommend someone for the gardens. I'm sure it would be valuable practical experience. In the meantime I'll have the elves try to tidy up a bit. And I'll think about this orchard idea."
