It had been a rough morning. Terry was a bit of an insomniac, didn't need even six hours of sleep most of the time, but it had been a bear to come home from Astronomy after 2 a.m., unwind a bit before going to bed, and then get up at half-seven. He'd taken a quick shower and grabbed an apple from the pantry so he'd have something to eat before he went to his first Arithmancy class. It was good to see so many familiar faces, especially Hermione's. He'd missed having classes with her last year and he'd not really had much chance to talk to her the last few months. She'd said she had another class that afternoon so she'd be staying at school, but Terry had to go to the Ministry for his internship after lunch. So he thought he'd try to catch her before he had to leave.

When he didn't see her in the Great Hall, he grabbed a bacon and salad sandwich and some sweets from one of the tables and took them outside, wondering if she'd gone off somewhere to have a quiet lunch. Much quieter than a person could have in the Great Hall, at any rate. He found her in the courtyard, sitting on a bench under an overhang, watching the rain. Remembering his recent conversation with Katie he decided not to bring up any topics Hermione might not want to talk about. Much safer that way, all round.

"Hullo," he said quietly. "Nice afternoon, unless you don't like rain."

When Hermione turned to see who had spoken so quietly, she was surprised to find that it was Terry. He wasn't someone she'd necessarily think about as being quiet, but he looked tired, so that might explain it.

"Hello, Terry. Having a quick lunch before work?" she asked, nodding at the food he was carrying. "I feel sorry for anyone who hates rain and lives in Britain. Fortunately, I like it."

She smiled and looked out at the courtyard. "Would you like to sit or are you rushing off to the Ministry?"

"Yeah, a quick lunch," he said. "Don't have much choice about the rain, right? You either like it, or learn to live with it, or you leave. But I like it too, at least if it's not a howling gale, y'know?"

There was room on the other end of the bench she was sitting on, so he nodded and took a seat. "My internship starts at 1 o'clock every day. So I've got some time before I have to go. Thanks. So what's your afternoon class, Herbology?"

"There isn't a lot of choice," she agreed. "I've always liked it, either sitting and listening to it or even taking walks in it. It can be refreshing, as long as it's not a howling gale."

Terry sat down, and she reached into her bag for her sandwich. "That's the same hours as mine. From one to five, since school started, though I only work Monday to Thursday there now." She nodded. "Herbology in the afternoons. Arithmancy went well today, but that's one of my favorite classes, so maybe that's why I enjoyed it."

"How are enjoying your internship? You're in Magical Accidents, aren't you?"

Terry waited for Hermione to start eating before he bit into his own sandwich. As usual, it was delicious; the house elves at Hogwarts were brilliant cooks, but that wasn't the sort of thing to mention to Hermione. He still remembered her elvish welfare society or whatever she called it.

"Oh, you know, okay." He ought to know where she was working in the Ministry, but he didn't. "Yeah, I'm in Magical Accidents. I'd say there's never a dull moment except I don't actually deal with any of the accidents or catastrophes. I file things, and dig things out of the files, and run around and fetch and carry and deliver. Maybe later on Peasegood'll let me do something more interesting, but I doubt it. What about you? Who're you working for?"

"That sounds familiar. I think all of the interns are going to be very good at filing by the time we're finished, if nothing else." She took a bite of her sandwich before she found her bottle of water.

"I'm working in Magical Creatures. My official contact is Newt Scamander, but Charlie Weasley, Ron's older brother, agreed to work with us. He's new to the department, so they have him doing various projects. Right now, we've been filing. We, uh, had been working on tracking werewolf packs before..." She shrugged, not having to verbalize it since Terry was a clever boy.
