"It was a war, man! To victor go the spoils and all that. If... and I do mean if, mate... if there were anything brought back from King's Cross, Muggle Relations might know about it seein' as how some of your all parents might have been interested in claiming things," the man behind the window gave him the floor and office number. "NEXT!"
"Thank you," arsehole. RB had waited in line for 20 minutes at the Lost and Found, where the guard who weighed his wand sent him, only to find out what he already suspected. His trunk, his books, his robes... his broom... all his stuff that he had when he crossed the barrier on to Platform 9-3/4 last year wasn't going to be found. He looked at the information on the slip of parchment the clerk at the window gave him and tucked it into his duster, the closest thing the muggleborn student owned to robes at the moment.
It was his first visit to the Ministry of Magic. He didn't know his way around but his dad worked for Her Majesty's Government. RB had witnessed bureaucracy in action enough times to know that this was going to be a long day indeed. What he couldn't do, even though he knew he should, was walk away. If he didn't have any luck today, he'd stop by that pretty Mrs. Weasley's office in Diagon Alley and take her up on her offer to help, but this was something he had to do himself. For himself, and for the others, because if he things were found, surely there would be some of the other muggleborn's school things too. RB felt a tingle of his old optimism return at the thought of being able to help Sophie, the Ravenclaw third year, find her beloved scrapbook, or help anyone really. At least he'd be making a difference after almost a year of complete waste.
There was no joy to be found in Muggle Relations. The old lady there had been very kind though and even offered him a peppermint before sending him to Magical Law Enforcement. RB stepped off the lift and looked around, trying to figure out which direction he was supposed to go now.
