"I don't think I'd want to see some of them on people," Hermione admitted, making a face. "Maybe I'm just a prude, but I can't imagine wearing little scraps of fabric and nothing else."
At Luna's question, she blinked and bit her lip. What did she find attractive? She could think of things she didn't find attractive much easier than things she did. "I don't know." She hated to sound foolish, but it wasn't anything she'd really ever thought about.
"I mean, I don't know if there's any one thing," she mused, picking at the hem of her shirt as she considered it. This wasn't the type of conversation that she'd ever had before, not even with Ginny during long nights at Grimmauld sharing a room. "I know more about what I don't find attractive, since I've never considered what I do."
She laughed suddenly. "Goodness, I'm not sure, but don't tell anyone you asked me a question that I didn't know the answer to. My reputation would be ruined." She looked out the window and gave Luna's question serious thought. "On a purely aesthetic level, I tend to notice a bloke's eyes and, um, well, his hands and how he talks and carries himself."
"But it's more than that. It's an amazing conversation that makes me really think or challenges my mind or a smile that makes my tummy flutter in a really siily way. It's things I don't even really know how to put into words because I don't even understand them, really." She looked at Luna and smiled wryly. "I'm afraid that I'm pants at being a girl sometimes and having that sort of girl talk."
Luna could agree with that. She wasn't very interested in seeing other people nearly naked. One may as well just be completely naked, which would probably be inappropriate.
Her question seemed to perplex Hermione, which made Luna smile a bit and watch her closely. She listened intently to the answer she did come up with, her smile growing.
"That sounds nice," she finally said. "Is this girl talk? I don't know about that, either. I know much more about Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, I can talk to you about them for hours. But I was curious, as I realized I'd never thought about what is and isn't attractive to me. People are just people."
She pursed her lips, thinking. Hermione didn't ask, but it was only fair, so she decided, "I think everyone I know has something extremely attractive about them. I just don't know what I prefer."
"I think it is," Hermione said thoughtfully. "We're discussing attractive things and just finished a conversation about clothes. If you bring up crushes and start giggling, however, I'm afraid that I'd have to threaten to hex you." She smiled to show she was teasing even as she shifted on the bed. This sort of conversation wasn't exactly comfortable for her.
She listened to Luna and nodded. "That's how I am, I think. I don't know if there's any one thing that is overall attractive to me. I've noticed attractive things about many people in my life, even those that I, personally, wouldn't feel that way about."
"I don't think this is something that's defined. If it was, someone would have written a book that suited every person in the world and would have made a vault of gold off of it," she said. "I think that people are attracted to different things for different reasons. It doesn't even have to necessarily be attractive in the romantic sense. In most cases for me, it's certainly never ventured in that direction when I've noticed something appealing about someone I know."
She shrugged. "I'd know more about the Goblin rebellion or the properties of a Transfiguration than I would about this kind of thing, but curiosity is never a bad thing. If we never question things, we never learn about ourselves, after all."
"Oh, well, perhaps we should start talking about books," Luna said, quite seriously. "What are your favorite muggle books? I'm hoping for some to add to the library this time around."
She listened to Hermione, nodding occasionally. "That makes sense, I think. Thank you for sharing that." Hermione seemed to be a bit uncomfortable with the topic. Luna wasn't, but tried to control her curiosity.
She'd have to think about what she liked about her friends and see if there was a trend. Hermione was right, it'd help her learn something new about herself.
