Rita took stock of the boy - well, man - when he sat down in front of her and introduced himself. Calm, confident - a far cry from the shy, stuttering Gryffindor she vaguely remembered seeing during the Triwizard tournament year.
She extended her hand and smiled. "Yes. Pleasure to meet you, Neville."
She didn't think she'd be able to fool him - he'd be wary after a year in the castle - but he already seemed less arrogant than Malfoy. If she was honest with him, she hoped she could get what she wanted.
"Thankyou for agreeing to meet me. They call you a hero up at the school, but I suspect you'll say you were just doing what you had to."
He nearly fell for it. The words I'm not a hero, I only killed that snake because Harry asked me to were on the tip of his tongue before he caught himself.
The serving girl arrived with menus, and he gratefully ordered a butterbeer. It gave him an opportunity to pull his thoughts together, so that he was once again calm when he turned back to Skeeter.
"I think before I say anything you should tell me what you want from the interview you're hoping for."
A strange expression flickered over his face for a moment, and Rita wondered what it meant. Had he been about to say something? Was he offended by the suggestion that he was a hero
