There wasn't anywhere else that Lavender wanted to be on New Year's Eve. Home was feeling less like home and more like somewhere she was just sleeping. Most of her belongings had been packed up and sent over to James' parents' house in Sydney; they were going to be staying there until they found their own place closer to where James was going to be working. James himself had gone to Australia a couple of days ago and would be seeing the New Year in over there. Or, she realised, would have already seen it. Still, he would be back later in the week, she reminded herself resolutely, and then she would be leaving herself next weekend.

Oh, Merlin.

Angelina's flat was the first one she ventured into and she grinned when one of the first people she saw was Dean, almost launching herself on him in a big hug. "Hello, handsome."

Dean had just ventured over to the sweets table to see what sorts of impressive things Angelina had put out there this time when he was practically tackled in a hug. He grinned as he realised who it was.

"Hey, beautiful," he countered, giving her a big squeeze before letting her go. "How have you been?"

Lavender pulled back, still smiling. "Not too bad," she said softly, realising that she was bound to get emotional no matter how much she drank tonight. Having come off her mood-balancing potions earlier in the month, she was planning to indulge, because when else was she going to get this opportunity. "Been having a quiet, family sort of Christmas."

"What about you? You look really well."

"Me, too. Except that nothing with my family is actually quiet," he said, laughing.

"I'm really well," Dean said. He couldn't help glancing back over his shoulder toward where Angelina was chatting with another party-goer. The answer would have been the same regardless of those developments, but it certainly didn't hurt. "It's really hard to complain when so many things are going right, you know?"

Then he remembered something else. "Have you talked to George lately?"

Lavender giggled. "No, I can't imagine it is. Think your family is probably louder than mine." She nodded, easily agreeing with his sentiment. "Yeah, I do know. Life is good right now."

She bit her lip. "Uh, no, I haven't. I keep meaning to, but I haven't found the time." Her brow furrowed slightly. "Why, is something the matter?"

"Oh, no!" he said, shaking his head a few times more than was necessary. "He seems to be doing pretty well, actually. We were just discussing some plans he has recently, and part of those plans involve your painting finding a permanent home."

Dean smiled widely. "I should let him tell you about it, but I wanted you to know. Since it's, you know, you."

"Oh, good." George had had more than his fair share of troubles in the last year, so it was a relief that there wasn't something new troubling him.

"Really? Oooh, sounds like I'll have to track him down at some point. Which I've been meaning to do, anyway, but now I have added motive."

She glanced around. "So where would a girl find a drink in a place like this." She gave him a smile. "Want to show me? And then you can tell me if there's anything new in the life of Dean or if you're still slaving over canvasses and washing brushes."

"Yes, you should." Dean grinned. He'd done practically nothing outside work but make plans for the projects George had given him, so the prospect of someone else learning about it all was exciting, even if he didn't get to tell her.

"Right this way, madam. And of course I'm still slaving over canvasses and washing brushes," he said, laughing as they moved toward where the drinks were, in Stephen's flat. "I've got twice as many projects now as I did six months ago. Loving every minute of it, though."

"You've got me all curious now. If I spot him tonight I'll have to jump on him or something." Lavender didn't meant that literally, though. Well, maybe a little. She was in the mood for lots of hugs tonight.

She followed him through to the other flat, glad to hear that he was doing well with his apprenticeship. "That's really great Dean. I hope you don't forget all about little old me when you're a famous artist one day." Lavender found a glass, reaching for a bottle.

"How could I forget you?" he said, putting an arm around her shoulder and giving her another squeeze. "You're the gorgeous girl in the red dress who made my upcoming fame, don't forget."

Dean finished off his beer and tossed the bottle in the bin, figuring he might as well get another drink while he was here. "How is the man who stole you away from me, anyway? Got everything packed up yet?"

She smiled softly, giving him a kiss on the cheek. "It seems the painting is rather memorable." She rolled her eyes. "Remember when we painted it? How I didn't have a clue where my life was going? Seems like I'm a lot closer to figuring that out now."

Lavender poured herself out a glass of champagne. "He's good. Gone to Australia to make some final arrangements but he'll be back later in the week before the final move." She wrinkled her nose. "I think I've got just about everything packed. A lot of it has already gone. It's so weird packing your whole life up into boxes."

"I remember," he said, nodding and squeezing her shoulders one last time before letting go. "It's good to see you closer, Lav. Damn good."

Dean couldn't imagine packing everything up to move so far away. Hogsmeade had become home in so many ways, so it was hard to even picture leaving at all. "Weird imagining you not being here," he admitted. Realising this was probably an emotional topic, he added, "Nothing owls and a few portkeys a year can't fix though, yeah?"

"It feels good," Lavender agreed. "I don't know if I've ever felt this... this confident and happy about this." A lot of what lay on the road ahead was still a mystery, but at least she was sure she was heading in the right direction now.

She took a sip of the champagne, nodding. "It's weird to imagine not being here," she confessed. "But, yeah, owls and porktkeys and stuff. My Dad's getting married in a few months, so I'll definitely be back for that."
