Date: December 26, 1999 Characters: Adrian Pucey, Hestia Jones Location: Hestia's flat Status: Private Summary: Hestia and Adrian have dinner Completion: Incomplete
Hestia had just removed the salmon fillets from the oven when the knock came at the door. She took a moment to check herself over, make sure she didn't have knickers strewn about. Her eyes fell on a stoppered vial sitting on the coffee table. She quickly removed the seal and drank down the contraceptive potion before tossing the empty vial in the trash. She wanted to be prepared for Adrian, but he didn't need physical evidence of it.
When she was satisfied that everything looked good, she opened the door.
"Hello," she said, leaning up to kiss him on the cheek. "Merlin, you're freezing! Come inside. I'll make some tea."
Adrian let her kiss him on the cheek as she let him into her flat. "Bloody British winters." He unwrapped his muffler and pulled the parcels from his cloak pockets.
"Mmmm yes. We should move the entire country to Bermuda," Hestia said, trying not to grin.
"Oh, you can put those on the table there," she said gesturing towards the coffee table, "and I can take your muffler." She hung it up carefully on the cloakrack. "So shall I get you some tea? Or would you prefer wine?"
Adrian resized his packages and placed them on the coffee table. He handed over his muffler and cloak and rubbed his hands together.
"Bermuda? I was thinking Australia, perhaps. I think I'll send some owls tomorrow, see if there are some suppliers in the Southern Hemisphere that need visiting. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her hello. "Wine, I think. I wasn't outside for that long."
"Oh, Australia would be nice too," Hestia said, smiling as he pulled her into his arms. "Wine it is, then. But first, I can warm you up like this," she murmured before kissing him deeply.
Adrian smiled as she kissed him. This was an unexpected development. Pleasant, but unexpected. He pulled back slightly. "Hm. I feel warmer already. And hungry, as well." Adrian summoned the wine bottle.
"Then I guess I'd better feed you," Hestia said. She made her way into the kitchen and sent some wine glasses out to the table before she arranged the food. Salmon fillets, green and yellow beans and roast potatoes. It looked - and smelled - heavenly.
Hestia sent the plates carefully ahead of her as she walked to the table. "Alright, I think we're ready," she said brightly.
Adrian fussed with the wine bottle while Hestia got dinner ready to serve. He poured the wine into the glasses and waited until the plates were on the table to help Hestia with her chair.
"It smells wonderful, Hestia. Quite a change from traditional British fare, but welcome." He placed his serviette in his lap and picked up his wine glass. "Happy Christmas."
"Thank you," Hestia said when he slid her chair in. "I hope it tastes just as good as it smells. Happy Christmas." She clinked the edge of her wineglass against his and then took a sip. "Oh, that's delicious. Thank you for bringing it."
Adrian sipped at his wine. He'd worked hard to save the estate from the Ministry once his father had gone running. Their cellar was well-stocked and Adrian had had no trouble selecting a bottle to bring along tonight.
"It was my pleasure." He put down his glass and picked up his silverware. He speared a few beans. "How was yesterday?"
"It was alright," Hestia said after taking a bite of salmon, "I had a good time catching up with my brother Morgan. And seeing my parents was nice. They weren't as critical as they normally are." Plus having the attention deflected off of Gwenog's successes and on to Hestia's 'lovely new man', had left Gwenog fuming, which was always fun to watch.
Adrian nodded. Since he was an only child, he had no real experience with sibling rivalry. But jealousy did not only rear its head in family situations.
"I'm glad you had the opportunity to chat with your brother." He sipped his wine. "Did you like your gift?"
"Oh yes, the flowers were beautiful," Hestia said, beaming at him. "I put them in a vase in my bedroom." She flushed suddenly. Maybe she should have put them in her living room or some place less personal. She concentrated cutting up a roast potato.
Adrian smirked. "I'm glad you liked them. What did Gwenog have to say about them?" What could he say? He was a Slytherin and as such felt the need to stir the pot whenever he could.
"The fish is delicious. My compliments to the chef." He gestured at the bottle. "More wine?"
"She was shocked. And jealous, I think. She kept staring at me the whole evening, like I had dragon pox. My mother was very impressed," Hestia said with a smile, "she quite fancies the idea of being connected to you."
"Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it," she said, "I think I'm good for now, but perhaps later? Tell me what you got up to with your mum yesterday."
"Jealous? Is that good? I didn't send them solely to make her jealous, but if it makes you happy..." He smiled at her. "Seriously, she must get the oddest things owled to her."
Adrian refilled his own glass and ate some more fish. "Yesterday was fine. Mother misses Father and I don't know what to tell her." He shrugged. "I've done everything I can to ensure we don't lose the house but it's got to be hard, not knowing where he is." Not that their marriage was a love match, but it still must be hard.
When she was satisfied that everything looked good, she opened the door.
