I wonder what this film will or won't change for people's personal fanons.

I wonder what people's personal fanons are with regard to our Navyboys.

Does James bite his nails, does Andrew Gillette snark at anyone that annoys him, is Theo a total slut!bunny? (The answer to all three is yes, btw XD) Tell me about your fanon, ask others about their ( Read more... )

I could go on forever about this, really. normandie_m May 31 2011, 23:35:28 UTC
I factor all the films into canon, and though I've never read them, some bits of the Young Jack Sparrow novels. I get quite antsy about the film canon....although I don't like the way they took James' character, my first instinct is to work around the problems canon presents rather than take things in an AU direction. I have to say that my fanon does bring James back from the dead- he winds up in Singapore with no memory of how he got there. I tend to think along the lines that rather like Barbossa, Calypso considered James important enough that he couldn't stay dead.

I haven't written for James in a long time, but I did recently do a bit of RP-related letter-writing where the navy has sent him to Gibraltar to command the Mediterranean fleet and protect British ships from the Spanish. Having not seen On Stranger Tides yet (I'm seeing it tomorrow!) but knowing that Gillette and Groves are on Barbossa's ship, James and his friends were briefly reunited in London before they all parted ways. I expect to build on Groves and Gillette's situation once I've seen the film.

I factor the Jack Sparrow novels in because we don't hear anything about James' family and these novels give him a cousin (Fitzwilliam P. Dalton- in my fanon he's James' cousin on his mother's side) who is revealed to be spying on Jack on behalf of the navy. I liked the idea that James wasn't the only naval officer in his family. The books also confirmed my fanon that James' father was an admiral (they give him the name Lawrence), so James' cousin was an added bonus. I also have extensive backstories for James' parents and in my fanon he has two younger siblings, but this is fast becoming TL;DR so I won't go into that.

I've only really figured out a few bits and pieces of Gillette and Groves' stories. Andrew has a French father and is the only child in his family- he had not been in the Jamaica for very long at the time of CotBP. Theo is British-born but has spent most of his life abroad and was raised in the West Indies (his father is a merchant captain). James and Theo have been friends in my fanon for longer than James and Andrew, and James asks for Theo's advice as a friend and as an officer.

So yeah. I expect On Stranger Tides will probably affect my fanon, though I'm not sure how yet. I'm going in with no expectations though.
