it was the single greatest summer
to every single one of us
it was the hottest damn days
that i had ever experienced
you were the most beautiful boy
i got to know that year
after the nights got cold
and the heat left me here
and the song on the radio
that we all knew the words to
and the wind from the windows
putting words to innuendos
as we sing from the bottom
of our heat-ridden bodies
and it felt like a perfect
version of our lives
and we never will forget
as we knew in that moment
that it was
the single greatest summer
to every single one of us
it was the hottest damn days
that we had ever experience
you were the most beautiful girl
that we got know that year
the nights got cold and
the heat left us here
we walked through the dirt roads
and played on the train tracks
laying down dirty old pennies
we knew we'd never get back
and we set off the fireworks
and caused quite a scene
but we never forgot
what living could mean
so we drove to the old house
that fell down way back when
and played in the ruins
of a family's old den
and the soda cans sprawled next
to the broken piano
played a song so familiar
a song we all knew
it was our favorite new tune
by Jimmy Eat World or Taking Back Sunday
Or some band we all liked
and listened to constantly
whether the words we sung right
or the tune we hummed in key
it never mattered
because it was sung by you and me
so sing me a new song
that brings back the memories
of high school and prom queens
and summers to envy
like
it was the very last summer
in a year full innocence
our bodies were still young
and our hearts were unblemished
with the heat thick in the air
and summer songs deep in our voice
it was the last summer here
you were always first choice
