I'm feeling a lot better now thanks to comics, assorted snack foods, and citizen kane.
yeah... i finally watched citizen kane for a second time around. i finally understand it. this movie deserves it's rightful place amongst the top 5 movies of all time.
next week is casablanca, which is one of my favorite romance movies of all time.
there was a really interesting discussion in ENG/EFP (for those wondering, that's Electronic News Gathering and Electronic Field Production). It was about the camera man's role in society. Like when everyone saw a black guy getting beat down by a bunch of cops in New Orleans. How did everyone see it? through the camera's eye. Why didn't the camera man stop filming and do something about it? That's not his job. His job is to document what is happening and to observe without altering what's really happening.
but the real discussion was, where does the camera operator draw the line? Mr. Awad was talking about how if someone randomly walked into the class and shot one of the students with a gun while he was filming, would he help? The idea is that the operator should stay behind the camera to document and get the guy's face and see the "atrocities" left behind becasue what if they were the only ones in the room, then no one would know how it really happened. part of the idea is that by this specific sacrifice, word can get out to stop the person through bigger means. By the way, he left the question unanswered in his hilarious dead-pan voice.
I'm really torn as to what i would do. He was also talking about war time conditions and what a person should be filming out there in the battle field. for some strange reason... this interested me. not because it was adventurous or fame, but because it was people who struggled to tell the truth. people who would die to bring home the perfect shot of what true war brings... only for it to be cut up, distorted by editors of the biased media to be used for propaganda.
when you're behind the camera... it's a different way of thinking. you're not just looking at a high speed chase, a car accident, a dead body, the crying mother... you're showing them to the world.
it scares me to think that this "eye" has so much power over the people. to capture what life brings us.
just swallow, hold your breath, point and click record.
and there you have it.
