Rachael Has Her Concerns About This Iron Man 2 Casting

Mar 13, 2009 01:42

For the first time, these aren't rumors. Mickey Rourke and Scarlet Johanson are officially part of the Iron Man 2 cast, along with Robert Downey Awesome Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Don't get me wrong, the Rourke casting (as baddie Whiplash, who wields nunchucks and flies around on a disc) is brilliant. I didn't see The Wrestler (I know, I know), but he was all sorts of awesome as Marve in Sin City and he kind of immediately gives off the impression of a baddie in a comic book movie. But the erstwhile Scarjo... Look, she's all manner of curvalicious, and I understand the need for sex-appeal in the female baddies*, but Scarlette Johanson has yet to convince me she has any sort of screen presence whatsoever. I like the girl fine in interviews, I like that she's an avid Obama crusher and that she's married to Ryan Reynolds, but I've yet to see a movie benefit from her charms, and when the other internet contender seemed to be the far more intriguing Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), I'm sad to see such a generic, hotgirl choice. But I live to be proven wrong, and would be very, very happy for Johanson to slip out of her rut.

*Don't get me started on the fact that male bad guys can totally look all manner of cantakerous and old, and female ones have to fit into a skin tight leather suit and play into a dominatrix fetish. Although I suppose if they only cast ugly chicks as evil I'd be complaining that the movies are making a tacit argument that ugly girls are evil...
