The Big Day

Aug 20, 2007 15:04

I don't have any memorable quotes from today, but it seems I ought to commemorate it anyway. It wasn't bad - though the first day never is. Kids are always excited but pretty well behaved.

This year will be very socially charged and socially challenging. That's all these kids think about, even more than typical 3rd-5th graders. I tried to lay it on pretty thick with my fifth graders that they are the leaders, they need to be helpers and good examples, etc. I tried to tell them that the better they get along, the better the year will be for all of us. So far they seem to like the idea of being the oldest kids.

They have the potential to be a really fun group - there's lots of personality. But they also have the potential to get very petty and crabby and nitpicky with each other. I'm hoping for the best.
