My Town

So, after spending most of the afternoon at the Field (their first free day since February, and all those people who are normally at the Zoo were at the Field), I was waiting for the bus across the street from the Marquette Building, designed by Holabird and Root, a landmark by any standard, which is right across the street (Adams) from the Federal Center, designed by Mies van der Rohe.  And of course, centering the plaza is Alexander Calder's Flamingo. This, of course, leads into a discussion of public art in Chicago, of which there is a lot. Aside from the works by major international figures (Picasso's sculpture in the County Building plaza, and the Miro across the street, and Marc Chagall's mosaic in the Chase Bank plaza), there is public art scattered throughout the city, along streets and in the park. Granted, a lot of it is awful, but there are some intriguing pieces to be found.

The Flamingo and part of the Federal Center:

A far cry from the dinosaur gracing the plaza in front of the Field. Or maybe not

city life, art
