A Lesson in Schadenfreude

I don't know what it is, but a lot of people are enjoying watching the downfall of Paris Hilton. It must be the fact that she is the archetypal spoiled brat -- rich, snobby, reckless, carefree. Someone who's always had life handed to her, never had any real problems or worries, and has always seemed above the law. And when it finally catches up to her, normal people take pleasure that she's been brought down to the real world.

And during the ordeal, Paris somehow found a way to make people dislike her even more. The sheriff inexplicably released her because she apparently didn't like being in prison. And then she tried to get the judge to conduct the hearing by phone when he wanted to find out why she was released. And to top it all off, after the judge ordered her to finish her sentence in prison, she had to be nearly dragged from the courtroom, crying and screaming, "It's not fair!"

And I am still baffled as to why this talentless woman is so famous. She doesn't do anything. She gets paid to show up to parties. And she wasn't even famous until she rode (cough cough) a sex tape to superstardom. I guess she's just a good distraction from people's real lives.

I don't even know why I care so much. It seems like it would be contrary to my interests, but I really am enjoying watching her suffer. Well, more like temporarily suffer. After all this, it's hard to not be cynical about the situation. I'm sure after this prison stint is over, she'll be bigger than ever.
