The Republican Party suffered an unbelievable rout in the midterm elections yesterday. Democrats won control of the House, the Senate, and most governorships. Not a single Democrat incumbent lost, and they gained seats. You'd think that I'd be crushed, and I was at about 5:30 this morning when I woke up and found out the results, but I'm not really heartbroken. Don't get me wrong, this loss sucks for a host of reasons, but I just would've expected myself to be more distraught over it. There's actually a silver lining in this, and it is that maybe now the Republicans in Washington will start acting like conservatives.
Everyone is chalking this up to a repudiation of President Bush, but I just don't buy that. If the voters didn't like Bush, they wouldn't have reelected him. No one is mentioning that maybe the unhappiness was over the Republican-controlled Congress not acting like a Republican-controlled Congress and getting measures passed that its supporters wanted, like a border fence, same-sex marriage initiatives, and corralling the judiciary.
I have more a vested interest in this because of my job, and there is no denying that the Democrat Party's record isn't exactly pro-military. It's won't happen right away, but say the Democrats control the House for a while, and say a Democrat is elected president in 2008. My pay will probably go down and funding will definitely dry up.
But above everything else, I am genuinely scared that our enemies abroad will see this as a victory for them. They'll probably see this as a defeat for President Bush, which it is, and they'll probably be heartened by the fact that Congress is now controlled by the party who has been calling for our withdrawal from Iraq, not the party who is committed to staying in Iraq until we win.
It's gonna be a wild two years. Get ready for subpoenas, sensational investigations, and rumblings of impeachment.
