I've seen Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Turino, The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button, The Reader, and The Dark Knight (among other movies) this
year. After glancing at the Oscar nominations lists, I am... well, I'm just
disappointed. Possibly shocked.
To be honest, I thought Slumdog Millionaire was a great movie, but not as
good as The Dark Knight. (It was also overhyped by the same people who
overhyped movies like Garden State and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
until I couldn't even watch those movies without a negative bias against
them. Thank goodness I saw it before the exaggerated word-of-mouth started.
God help me if I helped with that, by the way.) I thought Benjamin Button
was like Forrest Gump minus Tom Hanks (meaning, not as good) and Brad Pitt
as Button was more like a wooden automaton than a real person. I thought The
Reader was a fantastic movie... but again, not as good as The Dark Knight.
Gran Turino, as I've told people, can be summed up in five words: Clint
Eastwood is hilariously racist.
The Dark Knight was the best movie I've seen, possibly ever, hands down.
I've seen it 7 times at this point, twice in IMAX, and each time I've been
fascinated by the intricacies of Ledger's gait, the still-horrifying scenes
on the ferryboats, and the mounting tension of the opening sequence. Hot
diggity damn. I can honestly say that it was just such a well-done movie
that it at least deserved Best Director.
I don't care if I'm the only person saying this, but: Fuck you, Academy. To
be perfectly honest, if they had nominated The Dark Knight for Best Picture
and Best Director, I would have watched the Oscars. But now I'm just going
to sit it out because this year has just proven to me that the Academy is
going to worship at the shrine of "indie" films, regardless of how good a
film is. It doesn't matter how big a film's budget was, if it's a good film
it's a good film. Don't hold the box office receipts against The Dark
Knight, even if it makes you feel like your cock is small. Even Star Wars
was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director... and let's be honest, The
Dark Knight as a film is better than Star Wars.
On a related note, fuck Annie Hall. What the hell.
