Two 300 Tutorials

Two 300 tutorials using PS9 - the first one requested by madeline871, the second one accidental. Selective coloring is involved in both. Both icons come from a set located here.

I had originally intended to make only one tutorial, but when I'd completed it I noticed that I'd made a tutorial of the wrong icon. :p So rather than delete it after doing all that work, I figured I'd just post it with the one that was actually requested.

I just want to elaborate briefly on what each step was designed to do:

1. I used a screen layer to lighten up the image. My intention with the selective coloring was to enhance the reds in the image. I played around and found that setting it to overlay created a better look.

2. Again I was trying to enhance the reds in the image. The multiply layer was to make it a bit darker and brighter.

3. Adding the color balance layer was to add some cyans back into the image because I felt it was a little too reddish.

4. - 5. Was tweaking the selective coloring to find something I liked. I then added the color burn layer for more definition.

6. The color balance layer added some more cyan/green tones to the image, as in step 3.

Brief elaboration on the steps:
1. The soft light layer was used to lighten the image rather than duplicating the base and setting to screen because it added more reds to the image that I later tried to enhance using selective coloring.

2. As mentioned above, I used this selective color layer to bring out the reds.

3. - 4. Added back some cyan to the image. Usually if I enhance one color, I try to create a step to add back some of the opposite color just so it doesn't get too red or too blue, whatever the case may be. Of course, this doesn't work with every image, so I usually play around with the settings.

5. - 6. Increased saturation to make the colors brighter and stand out more. Again I tweaked the color settings until I was satisfied with the outcome.
