New Bedford police have arrested a man and a woman they described as a "mini-crime wave."
New Bedford Police
Patrick Mello, Jeannine Victorino
Police
said Jeannine A. Victorino, 31, and Patrick J. Mello, 30, have been
shoplifting Enfamil baby formula from area stores for the past several
weeks. The individual cans are worth about $25, a police news release
said.
Investigators
said previous attempts to catch the suspects resulted in high-speed
chases, which ended because the pair got away or it was not safe to
continue pursuit.
Police said an officer suffered minor injuries
on Friday when he was dragged by the suspects' car. An attempt by
officers to box in the car was unsuccessful when the suspects jumped a
curb and drove down the sidewalk to get away.
Officers finally
arrested Victorino and Mello on Tuesday night without incident. The
suspects were charged on numerous outstanding warrants from area towns
for larceny and motor vehicle violations.
Police described Victorino and Mello as homeless.
