so, i was linked by a certain rockstar (thanks, rockstar!) to this really awesome
music blog, and i downloaded lots of good stuff:
mum - go go smear the poison ivy - this is the first i've heard of mum, and apparently it hasn't even been released yet. oh well, i loooove it, it's really sample-heavy on some songs, other songs it's a little noise-rockish. string arrangements on some tracks. they're from iceland, so that automatically makes them cool.
the polyphonic spree - the fragile army - really epic-sounding and grand on some songs; i expected nothing less from them.
radiohead - kid a - what took me so long to get into radiohead? seriously...this album is a masterpiece. as pitchfork (ugh i know, i'm quoting pitchfork): "Kid A sounds like a clouded brain trying to recall an alien abduction. It's the sound of a band, and its leader, losing faith in themselves, destroying themselves, and subsequently rebuilding a perfect entity."
metric - grow up and blow away - apparently this is their debut lp that was just never released when it was supposed to be...it's pretty rad, it sounds like metric, but a little more raw than their newer stuff...almost a little less prepackaged-sounding? anyway...there are some catchy tunes on there.
iron & wine - the shepherd's dog - i think sam beam has made the permanent switch to hi-fidelity recording - and he's never sounded so good. he performed a lot of songs from this album when i saw him in concert, and i'm really happy that the recordings do them justice. it's still iron and wine, but with a band!
panda bear - person pitch - i finally got around to getting this album, and it's awesome...totally different than his debut. think of brian wilson from the beach boys, with really trippy vocal reverbs and loops of old songs. and hand clapping, of course.
antony and the johnsons - i fell in love with a dead boy ep - antony just makes my heart melt. and i asked him - are you a boy, or are you a girl?
the go! team - grip like a vice ep - wow, i can't wait for their new album. no screaming indie cheerleaders or city kids jumproping in these songs...some counting, but mostly just catchy hooks and riffs. and one campfire-sounding jam, recorded on like, an 8-track.
css - let's make love and listen to death from above ep - includes album version of the song, and remixes by calvin harris, hot chip, and simian mobile disco. it's such a catchy song all by itself, and the lead singer's accent is just an added bonus. the remixes are really awesome too...they all really have their own style...i listened to all four versions in a row and didn't get sick of hearing the same song over and over.
deerhunter - cryptograms - noise rock at its finest for the first 7 tracks. then, it magically turns accessible! how is that possible, you ask? well, in track 8, "spring hall convert", the chords magically transform into a catchy rock song before your very ears! and the pattern is kept up through the rest of the album. listening to tracks 1-7 makes 8-12 a real treat. not saying that 1-7 are bad, but...okay, i'll stop there. just
download it and you'll see what i mean.
animal collective - strawberry jam - i just couldn't wait any longer for this album to come out. i was assured by the concert i attended last year in nyc that their new album would be magnificent, as they played more than half of the songs on it. listening to panda bear's person pitch and then this album, you can really hear panda bear's influence on the album. umm....i guess that doesn't really explain the album too well. just
download it.
bjork - volta - i actually bought this album! it's good...not my favorite bjork album, but there are a few gems on there, especially her duet with antony from antony and the johnsons. i was kind of disappointed with some of the beats that she had worked with timbaland on...not as earth-shattering as i had expected. still a worthwhile purchase.
hot chip - the warning - bought this one too! i saw hot chip at bonnaroo (which is the first time i had heard anything by them), and decided to buy an album of theirs. sososo catchy...there's just something about the way they sing "hot chip will break your legs, chop off your head...hot chip will put you down under the ground!" with a catchy dance beat in the back.
if anyone wants any of these albums, try searching around
http://nodatta.blogspot.com or
http://ritmono.blogspot.com ... that's where i found most of them. or just ask me for a direct link.
i guess i should actually do some work now...
