What I'm thankful for

So, for those who are unfamiliar with how things work up here in Canada, this weekend we celebrated Thanksgiving. This was the 26th such event in my lifetime, and like many of the past few, I spent the Saturday evening stuffing myself until it hurt at my uncle's house.

In the common Thanksgiving tradition, one makes a declaration of what it is they are thankful for; this year, I decided to make this public statement to everyone on the internet:

I'm thankful for my furry friends. Seriously, you're awesome.

Why am I thankful for my small corner of the fandom this year, and why have I not done this earlier? For starters, I've been a furry for about seven years (since February 2004 when I created my fursona), and involved for six of them to some extent. However, things changed this year; while I started attending larger bi-monthly furmeets and conventions regularly a few years ago, this year introduced me to a small group of local furs that wanted to meet up much more often, and typically so they could dress up in their fursuits, cheer up kids and adults alike, and just plain have fun all over downtown Toronto.

Not having a suit of my own, I joined in as a spotter/handler, and to take pictures and videos you can easily find through my Google+ Profile and YouTube page. With no fewer than 7 of these fursuit walks from the end of March to the end of August (more than one a month!), it was a blast.

For the record, the events were:
  1. A lunch meet at Dangerous Dan's that turned into Flow's first chance to suit as herself, a trip up and along the Danforth
  2. A largeish walk that took us past the SkyDome during opening weekend, into a fur store, and through Kensington Market
  3. A walk through St. Lawrence Market to celebrate Flow's birthday
  4. A trip to High Park the following weekend for Loop's birthday, that was unfortunately shortened by rain
  5. A walk to celebrate my birthday, that took us past the SkyDome again, into an outdoor concert (organizers loved us!), and to Woofstock in St. Lawrence Market
  6. Mini golf in suit in July, followed by a housewarming for a now-local husky
  7. A short walk through Taste of the Danforth, and
  8. A trip to the waterfront in mid August, where we managed to go for a swim, crash a wedding, and chill through sunset with a bunch of kist by Harbourfront
  9. Taking a tiger out to Nuit Blanche just last weekend!
Much epic fun was had all summer. For periods, this has been driving me to try and commission a suit, but with upcoming expenses and a plan to hit Anthrocon for my birthday next summer, that's been put on the backburner.

I wonder what next year will bring...
