I'm sitting in my office at the University. It is directly on the main square of the town. The internet server crashed earlier, so I walked around all the stores, searching for a power strip. My apartment has 4 outlets spread around the walls. Umm, that is not sufficient for a modern travelling digital & computer-literate person. That's only the fridge, the TV, the fan and maybe a table lamp. What about the DVD player, the CD burner, the phone charger, the caera-battery recharger, etc.?
And the Tech guys here are making me very nervous, huddled over my laptop tryingto make a LAN card work so I can have internet in my apartment. I don't trust the director, Ivo, and it is not only because he nearly ran over me in his car while racing to the campus this morning (apparently to get the server back up -- although it meant he was at least 90 minutes late to work). And the Dean and I observed him hanging out on the main square both before and after we ate lunch yesterday when he was supposed to be doing, well, what he is doing now -- getting my laptop linked to the network. I guess if I show up early every day and complain, he will get it done just to shut me up. Squeaky wheel, yada yada.
The town was even almost lively when the sun was high, around 10. All the shopkeepers hang out in front of their shops, talking. I found fresh veggies, paper towels and Ruffles. The little things.
I found my text book that I have to teach Communications with next week, and found the gym manager's number, so I can stop waiting for someone to go there with me. I decided to start asking the admin staff for help finding a power strip. Let's see how they do.
