Food and Health and Work in Yap, Micronesia

There are some downsides to walking back and forth to work every day. One of them was the bus that came barreling through a 15 mph zone at about 40 mph yesterday and had me and a couple of old outer island ladies jumping to the side to avoid being killed. The road we were on is essentially a parking lot at 4:40 pm every workday -- it's right in the middle of Blue Lagoon market, filled with cars and people walking their groceries around after work. My first order of business this morning was to write a letter that hopefully gets the driver fired. I feel almost like Stephen King, but healthier, for the time being.

Another is when you get all prepared to walk home for lunch, and then a sudden deluge comes for half an hour. No telling when it might stop.

I cooked an awesome turkey chili yesterday for lunch, while an electrician FINALLY fixed our bathroom light fixture. I've asked for the housing manager to get this done weekly for 3 months. And because he can't get our roof fixed, it will just short out again in a few months. But we finally have a light in the bathroom again.

I was conscripted into making 7 awesome pizzas last night for Danka's guests, a video tourism crew from Taiwan. They were nice. I wasn't allowed to start until nearly 8 pm, so a ridiculously sweaty process in the kitchen with guests while Danka was sorting out payment and business stuff was not my idea of fun. But the pizza was good.

If it has stopped raining, I'm off home for sashimi.
