This week, Yap State Governor Robert Ruecho' has hosted Guam Governor Felix Camacho and Palau President Tommy Remengesau here in Yap for the 5th Summit meeting of these policy leaders. The newly-elected Governor Fitial of the Northern Marian Islands did not attend. They heard presentations on Regional Recycling & Solid Waste disposal, Education standards, Police management, Shipping, Invasive Species and other topics.
I got a call over lunch to come help out with the Joint Communique. So I helped the Governor's assistant, Dominick, hammer it out with a lawyer (Larry Goddard) and scientist (Joel Myles) from Palau and the Guam Governor's assistant, Shawn. The whole thing was broadcast live on the radio, and there was a reception afterward, though I was in my office finishing up the 10-page communique with Dominick until after 8 pm.
Camacho is the first Governor of Guam in more than 30 years to reach out to his smaller island neighbors and establish some kind of cooperation. I am very glad he is doing this, as I told Shawn. I don't know if Guam voters appreciate this, but it does present them an opportunity to be the Big Fish and lead their more traditional neighbors in areas of common policy.
The next such Summit will be here in Yap in July.
