Work in Colonia, Yap, Micronesia

These past two weeks have left little spare time in my days. Every hour of my calendar is filled with notes of meetings and phone calls. This afternoon, I was a bit depressed by a meeting with Lucky, the proprietor of a small Filipino-style restaurant on State land. He hasn't paid rent in 3 years, and didn't make a propsal last year when the State opened up the parcel for bids. So it's my job to evict him when it becomes necessary. He and his wife invited me over for tea and to discuss the situation. I like him personally, and he's very aware of the big picture; but he's also an illiterate 74-year-old man who has nowhere else to go. I like him, but he's more than aware that I work for the Yap Government.

We have water aerobics in the pool at Traders' Ridge Resort 3 times a week these days. I'm getting some exercise. Water can offer a lot of resistance, if you actually work at it. And to be honest, most days it is simply too hot and humid to have any interest in exercise -- the pool really makes it pleasant. I had three "business meetings" during the one hour of exercise; one with a local real estate developer (Don) regarding when he wants to occupy Lucky's restaurant, one with the Director of Education over a dispute between an outer island principal and the local chief, and one with an Education administrator (Sandy, the aerobics teacher) about several tons of books that sat on the customs dock for 4 months building up unwarranted storage fees.
