Photos from our House & Garden in Talguw, Yap, Micronesia

This is the house in which we live -- but we've never seen it this way. This was before the April 2004 Typhoon Sudal. Photo by my predecessor, Joe Sinisi. Notice the carport and roof shingles. These will be absent in the later photos. The fence was also completely destroyed and then rebuilt.

I moved to Yap in September and Danka came in late October. Then around the New Year, we started the garden out front; this is in January 2005. Some Plumeria (Frangipani) cuttings, spinach cuttings and a pineapple are visible. Behind the large mango tree stump in the foregroud (which is still there) is the smaller invasive tree stump that I rooted out by hand.

This is the main garden off the driveway in front in March of this year, coming along nicely. Now you can see two banana trees, 3 papaya saplings, pepper plants, cherry tomatoes, much more spinach and the rows of shrubs along the front fence.

We planted tomatoes in a small slender garden along the front of the house, and the first group peaked in April. Like this:

They've run their course and been replaced with a new batch of seedlings. But the main garden has continued to grow. This is in early May.

And this is the same garden last week. Welcome to the jungle.

From another angle. The tallest papaya in the foreground is over 6 feet (2m) tall. The taller banana is about 9 feet, depending on the angle of new leaves. The banana stalks turn over a new leaf about twice a week.

There are other garden areas, with flowers, shrubs, sweet potatos, and more papayas, but the photos don't show them as well.
