Book Club last night at our house featured "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn. Aussies Cheryl and Michelle were first and Peter and Tress arrived later. A great many absences. I probably liked it the most of anyone and Peter and I briefed the group on the Cult of Ishmaelity present on the web. The main critique of the book was that while it offered a different perspective on the human role in the world, it was not well-supported by fact and offered no solution whatsoever.
Is the point of enlightenment that you should go to music festivals, twirl fire and go vegetarian, maybe try astrology and vote Democrat or even Green if you're really into the cause? Is that the solution to human overdevelopment and overpopulation?
Come on.
I had great visual aids with my framed photo of Snowflake the Albino Lowland Gorilla making sweet love to his lady friend black gorilla at the Barcelona Zoo in front of hordes of screaming children. I even went back to find
my entry about Snowflake when he died, one of my favorite blog posts ever.
The previous book was Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness;" other previous choices have included Edward Abbey's "The Monkey Wrench Gang" and the next is my choice, Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World."
