NFL Trivia . . ..

justkj: Oh ye of great trivial knowledge... In what year was the first Pro Football Championship broadcast live from Coast to Coast?
rkledgerwood: I would guess the Ice Bowl in 1965, Dallas vs. Green Bay. But that is not an authoritative guess, by any stretch.
justkj: I found info on line that indicated that the first superbowl was covered by NBC and ABC, but no mention of the area covered. I will dig some more.

*** I found the first nationwide broadcast of a professional football game (not a championship): "the Portsmouth, Ohio franchise was moved to Detroit in 1934. Late that season, the team had two games scheduled against the Bears, and played one on Thanksgiving Day. Every ticket was sold and for the first time in NFL history, the game was broadcast nationwide by 94 stations. That game in Detroit became an annual event in the NFL." ("The First Twenty-Five," By Jack Clary; The Coffin Corner Volume XVI, 1994)

*** And here it is: "The NFL came of age in 1958 in perhaps the greatest game ever played. It was without question the most important game in NFL history. The Baltimore Colts, on an Alan Ameche 1-yard run, beat the New York Giants in overtime 23-17, the first NFL Championship game broadcast nationwide on live television." ("Pats build on NFL's tradition," by Gary Thorne, Friday, January 23, 2004 - Bangor Daily News)
