People mad online at Garth Brooks because they don't know Barry Sanders from Bernie Sanders
WRITTEN BY AUSTIN ANDERSON @A_Anderson44

Barry Sanders - the Detroit Lions Hall of Fame running back - and Bernie Sanders - the U.S. senator from Vermont and Democratic Party candidate for president - are different people. Apparently, not everyone knows that.

Country music legend Garth Brooks recently performed at Ford Field in Detroit, home of the Lions, where he took the stage in a Barry Sanders No. 20 jersey. It appeased the roaring crowd of over 70,000 people for obvious reasons. Sanders played his entire professional career in Detroit and rushed for the fourth-most yards in NFL history. Twenty years after his retirement, he remains one of the most beloved and well-known figures in all of Michigan.

After the show, Brooks posted a photo on Facebook showing off the jersey.

Some people in the comments section of the post evidently aren't familiar with one of the greatest running backs in pro football history.

Dozens of comments poured in from people who confused Sanders the athlete with Sanders the politician. One person called Brooks "a big freaking liberal socialist," while another said, "Don't care about your politics. Love your music. Let's keep politics and your entertainment separate."

These commenters seemingly associated the No. 20 with the election year of 2020 and assumed Brooks was making a presidential endorsement.

Brooks and Barry Sanders were both college athletes at Oklahoma State. Brooks received a track scholarship and graduated in 1984, two years before Barry Sanders started his freshman season in Stillwater. The former OSU Cowboys caught wind of the story Friday and took to Twitter to share a laugh.

There's no record of who the country singer supports politically. There is, however, a record of how great the running back was. In fact, there is an abundance of proof. He set 34 FBS records in college and holds 22 more in the NFL.

It doesn't matter what the commenters on Garth Brooks' social media say. It's 2020 and everyone should support Barry Sanders.

Berry Tramel: Garth Brooks' Barry Sanders jersey brings out the idiots, thinking he was endorsing Bernie Sanders
by BERRY TRAMEL

There’s a great line the United States Golf Association would use when people would complain about the difficulty of U.S. Open courses.

The U.S. Open does not penalize great golfers. It identifies them.

I thought of that when I heard the story of the Garth Brooks/Barry Sanders/Bernie Sanders controversy.

Social media, for all its many ills and its few redeeming qualities, identifies idiots.

Article: Former OSU star Barry Sanders 'asks' singer to be Garth Brooks' VP after Bernie Sanders jersey drama
Brooks last weekend took his country-music tour to Detroit’s Ford Field, where more than 70,000 fans assembled, pleased to know that worst-case scenario, the Lions were not going to lose. Brooks, a marketer of the highest order but also a loyalist, selected wardrobe that was true to himself and played well to the masses.

A Barry Sanders No. 20 jersey, from old Detroit Lion days.

But because we’re increasingly a nation of blockheads, some failed to make the connection. They thought a shirt that said “Sanders” and “20” was a clear endorsement of Bernie Sanders, running for the White House in this election season of 2020.

And when Brooks posted a photo of that concert on his official Instagram account (that part’s on you, Garth), the idiots were unchanged.

“Well cross Garth off the artists I’d like to see. Sure with (wish) his music was good enough to ignore his politics.”

Sure wish social media was good enough to ignore the politics.

“Move! You and all your riches.”

Garth has moved. He’s gone from Owasso to Nashville, where there is no state income tax. I have no idea which side of the aisle Garth prefers politically, or if he’s like me and wouldn’t mind both sides falling into an abyss.

“Love you, hate the shirt. Trump2020.”

So you’re saying Trump is anti-Barry Sanders. That’s going to be quite conflicting news for some OSU fans.

“Weird. That a millionaire would like a socialist. Hey Garth are you going to distribute your millions.”

Hey, idiot on social media. Are you going to distribute your ignorance?

Can we turn serious for a minute? Are you on social media, talking to people that you don’t know about things that you know nothing about? If so, what are you doing? There’s a great big wonderful wide world out there. Why not trying exploring it? Talk to people. See things. Read stuff that is longer than 14 words.

The world is full of Donalds besides Trump. Bernies besides Sanders. Warrens besides Elizabeth. McConnells besides Mitch (not a fan of Mitch McConnell, by the way; he wouldn’t call me back about Louisville and conference realignment a few years ago). Buttigiegs besides, well, you’ve got me there.

But what if we all just settled down? What if we remembered that America is more than politics? What if we realized that the person who affects our life the most is not Obama or Trump or whoever is next in the Oval Office? The person who affects our life most is us, and our friends, and, in the words of rabble-rousing Fred Rogers, the people that we meet each day. Some of them even wear jerseys that aren’t a political statement.

Garth Brooks Honored Football Player Barry Sanders and Many Confused It With a Bernie Endorsement
BY MADELEINE CARLISLE
FEBRUARY 29, 2020

Well, it’s definitely an election year. Just look in the comments on country singer Garth Brooks‘ Instagram.

After performing in Detroit on Feb. 22, the renowned musician posted a photo of himself wearing a Barry Sanders jersey. Sanders is a retired Hall of Fame running back who played for the Detroit Lions.

Not all of his followers understood that the jersey was a reference to the football player and an homage to the city where Brooks performed. It appears that many thought it was an endorsement of Democratic presidential-hopeful Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. And many were not pleased.

“You just lost a fan. Can’t believe you’d ever support Sanders,” one commenter wrote. “So disappointing. Hey, Garth, why haven’t you shared your money with all of us?” reads another. Others in the comments were quick to point out that Brooks was referencing the football player, not the democratic socialist. The Instagram post has over 14,000 comments so far.

Brooks wore the jersey while playing at Ford Field, in front of a crowd of roughly 70,000 people. According to Michigan Live, during the concert he told the crowd that he wore the jersey not only because he was performing where the Lions play, but also because both he and Sanders went to Oklahoma State University.

“I was lucky enough to be an athlete and to wear the same uniform as this guy wore in college,” Brooks reportedly said during the concert. “I was lucky to go to school with him. You guys got the greatest player in NFL history in my opinion in this jersey. I love this man.”

Looks like news of the mix-up got back to Barry Sanders himself, who tweeted on Friday,

However, the Detroit Lions decided to weigh in.

Brooks doesn’t usually make his personal politics public. In 2017, he said he would have performed at President Donald Trump’s inauguration had he not had a scheduling conflict.

“It’s always about serving. It’s what you do,” he said at the time. “Can’t thank the Obamas enough for serving this country, and may God hold Trump’s hand in the decisions that he makes in this country’s name as well,” he continued.
