Former NMI resident Bruce Jorgensen arrested in Florida for deserting son
02 Feb 2016 By Variety News Staff
POLICE in Plantation, Florida are searching for a missing 16-year-old boy whose father is accused of abandoning him, according to WPLG channel 10, an ABC-affiliated television station in Miami, Florida.
WPLG reported that Aage Jorgensen was last seen Dec. 18 at the American Heritage School in Plantation.

Police said they were not notified about the boy’s disappearance by Hawk’s Landing security until Jan. 9, when his father, Bruce Jorgensen, 58, dropped off flyers in the community in an attempt to find his son, WPLG stated.
A lawyer and former NMI resident, Jorgensen represented retiree Betty Johnson in the class action against the CNMI government and the Retirement Fund over nonpayment of government contributions. The lawsuit was settled in Sept. 2013.
According to WPLG, detectives said Jorgensen was uncooperative with authorities and said that he did not wish to file an official police report. Detectives told WPLG that the father later claimed he had kicked his son out of his car on Dec. 27 when Aage was being rude. “Jorgensen said the incident occurred somewhere on Northwest 136th Avenue, and he had not seen his son since,” WPLG said.
“Police said Jorgensen was contacted by detectives Jan. 14 and told them that his son was still missing, but he did not want to file a missing person’s report.”
WPLG said Jorgensen was arrested Tuesday last week at Miami International Airport with the help of the FBI and Miami-Dade police after he purchased a one-way ticket to New Zealand.
Jorgensen, WPLG added, faces a charge of unlawful desertion of a child.
“Detectives said foul play is not suspected in Aage’s disappearance. Authorities said they want to reassure Aage that he is not in any trouble with authorities, but they want to make sure he is safe,” WPLG said.
Aage has a history of running away from home, police said.
NBC 6 in south Florida reported that Aage is a white male, 5’9” and 140 pounds with short brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a peach-colored Adidas T-shirt, white cargo shorts and Scott slippers.

Arrested buying one-way ticket to NZ

Bruce Jorgensen, left, was arrested at Miami International Airport. His 16-year-old son, Aage, right, has been missing since late December.
The father of a 16-year-old Florida boy who has been missing for more than a month was arrested at Miami International Airport after purchasing a one-way ticket to New Zealand.
Bruce Jorgensen, 58, was taken into custody and charged with unlawful desertion of a child.
The man's son, Aage Jorgensen, was last seen on December 27 when his father allegedly forced him out of his car in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Sunrise for being disrespectful.
Police said earlier that Jorgensen has been uncooperative with the investigation and never filed a missing person report.
They only learned of Aage's disappearance on January 9 after Bruce Jorgensen was spotted handing out 'missing' flyers around town.
In a press release put out after the father's arrest Tuesday, Plantation police said foul play is not suspected at this time.
Detective Philip Toman said Aage, a student at American Heritage School, has a history of running away from home, and police suspect he may be hiding in Broward County, reported the Sun-Sentinel.
Kristen Lake, a long-time friend of Bruce Jorgensen's, told CBS Miami the father and son moved to Plantation in the summer of 2015 so Aage could play tennis there.
Jorgensen has been raising Aage on his own and was said to be estranged from the rest of his family.
CBS reported that the 58-year-old has been paying in cash for most things, including thousands of dollars in rent and private school tuition for Aage.
Jorgensen withdrew his son from American Heritage School after the winter break.
When interviewed by police, the father said that he kicked his son out of his car while driving along Northwest 136th Avenue in Sunrise on December 27 because the boy was being rude to him.
A woman later told police that on that day, she was approached by the teen asking her for a ride.
The elder Jorgensen had his initial court appearance Wednesday and was ordered held without bond.
Aage Jorgensen is described as 5-foot-9, weighing 140lbs, with short brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a peach-colored Adidas T-shirt, white cargo shorts and flips flops.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is being asked to call police at 954-797-2100.

PLANTATION (CBSMiami) - A neighbor of a teen who has been missing for a month sheds new light after his father was arrested Wednesday. “Overly polite, maybe one of the most polite boys,” Kristen Lake said of 16-yar-old Aage Jorgensen.
Lake is an old friend of Aage’s father, Bruce Jorgensen.
The Jorgensens moving to Plantation in the summer of 2015 so the teen could play tennis there.
Lake was stunned to hear police arrested Mr. Jorgensen at Miami International Airport with a one-way ticket to New Zealand. “This has been a very emotional last several weeks knowing he may not be okay,” Lake said. “And with news of the arrest tonight it kind of validates the fears.” Lake says her family last saw the teen on December 20th and he seemed fine.
Another woman told police the teen asked her for a ride on December 27th, the same day Jorgensen told police he threw his son out of the car for being rude - the last time he saw him.

Mr. Jorgensen withdrew the boy from school after winter break.
Police say Mr. Jorgensen has refused to help them nor would he file a missing person’s report 19 days after Aage disappeared. It was actually someone else who notified authorities.
“We do wanna stress though, in case he’s watching these news reports that he’s not in any trouble,” said Plantation police Det. Philip Toman. “We want him to reach out to us to tell us he’s okay.”
The arrest warrant for Mr. Jorgensen raises more questions than answers.
It indicates the father-son duo don’t have much of a traceable history. The two also move around a lot and Mr. Jorgensen pays in cash - including thousands in rent and private school tuition.
There is no mother in the picture and family is estranged.
Jorgensen refused to give police his date of birth and social security number.
The father’s car with Oklahoma tags sat outside their Plantation apartment where police found a letter from father to son.
Police say nothing indicates foul play. But as each day goes by with no sign of the boy, they get more concerned.
And looking back, Lake wishes she’d noticed any red flags. “That’s why I’m currently struggling, because I wish there had been,” she said.
