A Hot Breakfast & Nights Out in Bratislava, Slovakia

Jul 17, 2004 18:19

Some days, it just doesn't pay to be active. Danka and I planned to bike ride out to Dunajska Luzna and lay in the sun and swim to perfect our tans. At 11:45, though, I was still groggily straggling out of bed. Took her forever to return with her bicycle from the shop, and by then I had already made a spicy egg omelette.

Note: we bought these extremely hot peppers at the market in Barcelona. They look like habaneros, and may be; they are certainly among the hottest peppers I've ever eaten, and I am a connossieur. Anyway, I cut part of one (w/seed, yum) in the eggs. Then I went to put my contacts in. What a stupid thing to do! I enjoyed my eggs, but hours later I was deciding to throw my contacts away, and that I didn't even want to go to the lake and watch the lovely sunbathers through my blood-stained eyes.

The saddest part is that I have done this same routine many times before. Some guys learn from their mistakes, and some just have to keep pissing on the electric fence . . . .

I played 3 hours of Civ 3 on the computer on a perfectly beautiful Saturday afternoon and watched My Man Lance Armstrong dominate Stage 13 of the Tour de France. I'm surprised he still doesn't have the yellow jersey; that guy was sweating pretty hard to keep it.

Saturday is a mellow day in Bratislava. As in Prague, most Slovaks and Czechs go to the countryside on Friday afternoon to hang out in the cottage. Really, no joking. Although last night, the old town seemed pretty festive.

Danka and I are trying to do the things you do in B'lava, as I may not have a chance again for some time. So it was a dinner at Romeo & Giulietta, perhaps the best Italian joint in town. It was empty but for us. Not a good sign on a Friday night. I know the owner, an Italian married to a Slovak. He shouldn't have moved to this new location, but rather one with a patio for nice summer evenings. My friend Ibrahim's place was packed -- and Marcelo was there with his American wife. We begged off joining them as we were exhausted by 10 pm. We slept over 11 hours.

My friend G visits tomorrow from Prague. He and I played baseball on the same team for a few years as kids; we won 2 city championships in Norman, Oklahoma, not much thanks to me. Best friends in High School. I've thus known him for over 26 years. Lived with him for several months in Prague and while travelling in Morocco, the Benelux, and SE Asia.
