One of four victims in critical condition
The mostly-peaceful New Year’s Day celebration in this island nation was marred by a road accident where four individuals, all of them Filipino nationals, were sideswiped by a speeding car. Three of the four victims were identified as Pamela Maan, 31, Reizel Parandas, 23, and Rodelio Parandas, 35. Reizel Parandas worked for Rur Gift Shop, while her husband Rodelio works for Palau Central Hotel.
The incident occurred around 1:45 AM on January 1, 2016 in-front of the former Shangri-La Spa in Malakal. The victims just alighted from their car in-front of the former Shangri-La Spa when a speeding car driven by one Noe Yalap hit a car parked nearby.
“Maan was sandwiched between the wall and the parked car,” one of the victims told Island Times. Maan, who is said to be working for Palau-Pacific Renewables, sustained serious head and body injuries.
The other victims sustained injuries to the head and different parts of the body.
According to the lady victim, they just alighted from their car when a car driven by Yalap sped by and hit a parked vehicle in the area. “We were bringing food to our friends in the area when it happened,” she disclosed.
Maan and the other victims were rushed to the Belau National Hospital for treatment. The victims, except for Maan, were released from the hospital after one day. Yalap was then apprehended by police officers who responded to the scene. It was believed that Yalap was intoxicated at that time of the accident, but it has yet to be confirmed.
It is not yet known if charges have already been filed against Yalap. Maan is in critical condition with severe head injuries. She is currently on respirator. “She needs to be stabilized before she can be airlifted for further treatment in the Philippines,” a hospital staff told Island Times. It was learned that the husband of Maan flew in to Palau from the Philippines last Friday to be with her.
Many people, including several church leaders, came to visit Maan at the hospital on the evening of January 1. The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP) has sent out an appeal on Facebook asking for blood donors who can provide Type AB+ blood for Maan. Other than the road accident in Malakal, the New Year celebration in Palau was mostly peaceful. {/reg}
