Earthquake & Tsunami Devastation in Japan; We're in Guam

Mar 12, 2011 04:22

We're fine; had just returned from hospital, dinner & grocery shopping when the news hit. We sat in the car listening to the radio news, looking WNW over Tumon Bay from Tumon Heights in Guam. We're on a hilltop maybe 200 feet above sea-level, overlooking a 5-story abandoned shopping center project and across from several 15-30-story beachfront hotels.

If a tsunami had hit, we would have had an awesome view. I theorized, and Nelson later confirmed, that the wave action from the North, if any, would likely focus on this beach.

We watched a huge container ship pass Northbound on the horizon. Rumors of 1.5-meter waves accelerating in the shallows to hit our very coast wee on the radio and TV. They closed the road below us and evacuated the beachfront hotels.

But mostly, it was just police cars sirening up and down the streets all evening while we watched tv reports with Nelson. Some neighbors down the way had a party to watch for the tsunami until way after it was too dark to see. But they do that every night anyway.
