KOROR (Palau Horizon) - With bartenders putting to shame jugglers in the carnival as they mix cocktails and entertain guests at Sea Passion Hotel, Mastah -- a newly-established Flairtending Club in the country -- showed off the art of bartending through its first ever flairtending competition held on Sunday.
The flairtending competition was the first major activity of Mastah after their corporate charter was approved on May 25 this year. It’s an organization of more than 30 bartenders from different bars, resorts and hotels in Palau which aims to promote responsible drinking and offer free bartending trainings, conduct charity works, and help enhance tourism hospitality in Palau.
“The purpose of this competition is to show to everybody that the bartenders in Palau are really competitive,” said Erwin Muyot, President of Mastah Palau. “Among our objectives is to reach out to other island countries like Guam and Saipan to have invitational flairtending competition in the future so we can really show the talents that we have in Palau in the art of flairtending.”
The competition was divided into two categories: the Working Flair or classic flairtending for beginners and Extreme Flair for experts and professionals.
With her signature Shakira moves and back-pouring techniques, Elisa Francisco of Palau Plantation Resort bagged the first ever Working Flair category champion title, besting six other contestants. “I’m so proud of myself,” shared Francisco. “I’m happy that I made it. I only had three weeks to train because we always have a lot of customers at the resort.”
Another female bartender, Febee Perucho, from Palau Royal Resort won second place; and Kenny Tungpalan from ATT Bar bagged the third place. Other contestants were Marife Claus, Paul Marque, Elisa Francisco, Jon Medalla and Noel Babiera.
On the other hand, it was all about perfecting his craft for Extreme Flairtending champion Harold Villanueva, from The Taj Restaurant. Villanueva has been in the bartending industry since 2003 and has already joined 15 flairtending competitions, winning 11 nationals and one international, but this did not make him rest on his laurels. He trained for six months, everyday from 12:00 to 2:00 in the morning right after work.
“I’m really happy,” said Villanueva. “I’m carrying the name of the restaurant I work for, so of course, I really gave it my best.” He wowed the judges and the crowd with his 360 turns, juggling four bottles, back-pouring techniques and his winning cocktail which he called ‘Fruit Fantasy’. “I even ordered the ingredients from the Philippines,” he said.
“He deserved to win,” said Muyot. “He won because he excelled in demonstrating technical difficulties and showing more varieties in techniques.”
Ricardo Stohner from Elilai Restaurant and Arnel Saplot from Palau Pacific Resort bagged the 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. Other contestants were Oscar Fortus and Frank Jerusalem.
All winners won cash prizes, gift certificates from event sponsors, plaques and trophies.
Entertainment and intermission numbers were also provided by ATT, Blue Corner and Imperial Bars, and Kevin and the Foot Long Band. Judges included Kassi Berg, Jojo Camacho, Erwin Muyot, Imelda Nakamura, Edwin Aquino and Terebkul Bedor.
According to Muyot, the funds raised will be used to provide free trainings to locals at the soon-to-open Palau Tourism & Hospitality School of Excellence in Palau Community College. “At the same time, we want to discover local talents, so that in the future there will be local bartenders participating in the competition, not just foreigners,” explained Muyot.
