My Sister’s Keeper Mini-Review, Clips, and Thomas Dekker Interview

Jun 23, 2009 22:28

So I got to see a special screening of My Sister’s Keeper tonight. I’m not really into boo-hooey family dramas but the tickets were free and Thomas was in it so I was thrilled to go (I’d already planned on seeing it just for him.)

The film was surprisingly not sappy or cliche - I admit I cried a few times throughout the film and didn’t feel emotionally manipulated into doing it. The 2 young girls in the leads were fabulous. I love Sofia Vassilieva from MEDIUM and she played the dying girl, Kate, with cancer really well. The storytelling wove the different character’s perspectives all throughout it and it wasn’t difficult to understand nor was it ever confusing.

Thomas’ character Taylor comes in about 1/2 way into the film. I remember in an interview he said that he couldn’t believe that he got that part that “all of the people around me were so much above me.” Thomas is a sweet young man, driven, but very VERY modest. From the second he came onto the screen it was impossible to take your eyes off of him; just like in FROM WITHIN, he stole each scene even when he was supposed to be highlighting the joy of the girl it was hard to pay attention to anyone else. He just has a presence that commands your attention. His character was quiet, caring, and was the bright spot in the girl’s life of pain and misery due to her disease.

I love how he really underplayed the role. He’s not in it for very long - but if you goto the movie just to see him, the rest of it is good as well. Cameron Diaz really stretched her wings being the former lawyer who took that drive to succeed and turned it into becoming a crazed emotionally blinded woman who refuses to realize hard truths that are around her and that her obsession has nearly broken her family to pieces.

And Jason Patrick - damn - he still looks good, it’s nice to see him get brushed out of retirement.

Go see it and support Thomas, but be sure to bring some extra napkins in with you…you know, your “allergies” are going to kick up. Goto Sarahconnorsociety.COM to view the videos!
