SV & SPN finale thoughts

So I've determined that for Smallville even though I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Lois and Clark, I'm not as insane of a shipper as I might be. For Smallville interesting writing and creative storylines interest me far more than shipping. Meaning, yeah there wasn't any big obvious Clois revelation last night and I'm not all broken up over it. I now officially have low standards for SV so if they give me anything 1/2 way interesting I'm all for it. Last night appears to be the first step on the producers part to work on retconning the show and getting it aligned back to the mythos. Fans may hate it but Kelly and Brian, unlike their previous predecessors actually respect the Superman legacy and want to work on restoring things back to how they should be. I don't blame them too much for the Blahna arc this season, something tells me that it'll all end up erased as a bad nightmare.

There are weird things going on at the end of the episode that are very, very indicative that time somehow got fractured and I think it happened when Doomy/Davis got split. Clark's destiny is/was tied to Doomy and when he broke apart, he somehow ripped open a space/time portal on earth and we've got parallel dimensions interacting together. This all happened along w/ Lois getting knocked into and thrown out of time.

First up - Clark. Tom underplayed Clark's pain over losing Lois and he did so in a way that was completely in line w/ how he always acts w/ Lois. What I love about Tom and how he portrays Clark's love for Lois is that there's this calming bliss that comes over him, unlike the overly dramatic, whiny, forced emotions that he always shows with Blahna.

I loved the phone booth RBB scene because Clark was practically touching the glass when he was talking to Lois - his love for her was written all over his face as he was trying to say goodbye to her. Clark's not comfortable w/ himself enough to trust bringing Lois in because you know, he hurts everyone who he loves and he's the world's biggest self sacrificing SOB. Clark Kent at this point can't comfort Lois properly, but the RBB does so in a heartbeat. It's that beginning glimpse that Superman is able to calm the wild crazy part of Lois. Yet without the storm that is Lois Lane around him - Clark is a lost, lost man.

Clark went off to find Doomsday after the beast was split from Davis and what did he do when he got to the street? He got immediately distracted and STARED at the phone booth and began obsessing because Lois wasn't there - so much so that it took nearly getting smushed by a thrown car to wake him up.

Then at the end - he didn't goto Chloe at the funeral and when he finally did goto her, the loss of Lois was present first and foremost on his mind. (And yeah, Chloe is #1 bitch in my book for being selfish and not even putting up the missing fliers herself.)

So watching the funeral closely - Dinah, Bart, and Ollie were all "there" crying - and Dinah "touched" Chloe on the shoulder - but she didn't react to any of them. Then later at her new place - both she and Clark spoke that all 3 didn't survive the explosion and that Clark had no idea how he escaped but that he just survived. He then shimmered out as he left her apartment.

Methinks we're going to have 2 or 3 parallel universes converging all at once and in the season premiere they'll all be overlaying each other and the key to bringing "right" what all went wrong will be Lois. Whenever she disappeared to she'll have to figure out how to set back time and stop all of the catastrophe's that are about to explode w/ Zod's return, etc.

In the end of it all Lois won't remember anything and it'll be Lois who'll make Clark whole and complete again. The last time that Clark abandoned his humanity was Exodus/Exile seasons 2/3 when destroying his baby ship caused Martha to lose her baby. The only time that Clark ever desires to depart w/ his humanity is when he's in so much pain that he can't face it. Stupid Chloe and her selfish ramblings and Clark being also mixed w/ guilt over the JLA and Jimmy muddied the real cause of his anguish which was the fact that Lois was just GONE. He didn't even want to go back to the Planet because that place was Lois to him. How can anyone not see how wildly romantic that is?

The finale was confusing - but at the same time I confess I liked it better than many that we've had recently because the creative team are taking the show in a new, very SCI-FI direction. It's no longer a teen drama but it's moving into it's own territory with being more like a comic book. Clark is finally an ADULT. Yep things going on weren't cannon - will Jimmy get saved when everything gets reversed? I don't know. I don't have a problem too much w/ them resetting things w/ him though if it means that the end game is to get the show moving FINALLY towards a more canon type of storyline. Kelly and Brian have a LOT of crap to still clean up from years and years of Goughlar trashing the mythos. The real question will be at what time did Lois vanish to? Lois is a smart cookie. Her thoughts were overwhelmingly overcome w/ thinking about Chloe so it's possible her leap backwards wasn't that far back, but who knows. It'll be exciting to see how she's going to effect everything.

Alison's contract is up next year so she will FINALLY be gone at the end of next year. And Erica's getting 17 eps - so we should have fewer snoozefest eps next season...and better yet NO BLAHNA whatsoever!

Onto the second best finale of the season...TERMINATOR still wins as having the BEST finale of the year so far, however.

SUPERNATURAL

THIS is how to write a finale to give your fans the big payoff! This whole season was about wrapping up dangling story arcs and bringing them all together to make way for the Apocalypse that will completely encompass the final season of the series. 'In the Beginning' we got our reminder that YED had nefarious plans for Sam and the children and that the angels have no idea what they were. They also needed Dean to see though that Sam was chosen for something dark and that he had no choice - and that Dean couldn't even blame his Mom for the deal that she made, if she hadn't made it, he wouldn't exist. Looking back on things I think that maybe the whole point was to let Dean know that it all wasn't Sam's fault - things were much larger than him and that he is not the one to blame.

So I have no idea of what to think about Zachariah and this whole laid back attitude of letting the Apocalypse just happen. The angels even seem to believe that God is no longer there. This sort of reminds me of a pair of fantasy books that I love by Stephen R. Donaldson "The Mirror of her Dreams" and "A Man Rides Through" - in them a realm is at war w/ conflicting sides of magic. The king has made himself seem feeble and incompetent and let's war break out around him as he appears weaker and weaker to everyone around him. The whole time he's evaluating what everyone's doing - his inactivity is ferreting out his real enemies he's discovering who his most loyal allies are. I sort of feel like this is going on w/ God in SPN. He gave the big proclamation that Dean Winchester needed to be saved and then sat back and waited to see who were his most loyal servants and how they would react knowing that the seals were being broken. Castiel/Ana already ganked Uriel who was causing dissent amongst the Angel ranks and he was blatantly disloyal to God. Now Castiel has gone rogue w/ Dean. Humanity is God's greatest creation and Cas is siding with mankind to save them. This is going to eventually earn him high marks in God's eyes.

Zachariah has been taken over with pride which was his downfall, this was followed by the fact that he lost faith in his Father. Dean's a good soldier but he doesn't report to underlings, he'll only report to the top dog and obey God. Cas seems to understand that which is why he sided with him.

Ruby - ok so I LOATHE Genevieve Cortesse. I'm sure that she's a nice girl, but GOD is she a bad actress. If there was a weak point of the season it was casting her as Ruby. Katie Cassidy was so good in the part that when she was recast, all that I wanted was for Ruby to die. Last night had the most satisfying moment ever w/ team Winchester holding the bitch down so that she could get ganked. From about 1/2 way through the season I knew that Ruby was up to no good and that she was actually working w/ Lillith. Ah karma is a bitch.

So poor Sammy - he's going to be the grovelling king next season. NEVER DOUBT DEAN WINCHESTER. I did love that ganking Ruby finally brought DEAN back. He's going to be a force to be reckoned with next year. What will be interesting is to see what ends up happening w/ Castiel and the ArchAngel. I'm guessing, it'll be nothing. Cas will be given a free pass for breaking protocol.

I hope this means that Ana can break free to help them out. Team Winchester/Castiel are going to need all of the allies that they can find and I like Ana. Both she and Cas have faith in humanity that none of the other angels that we've been introduced to seem to have this faith.

YED was given orders directly from Lucifer himself to find that one special child who could withstand the demon blood, could learn to control it, and become the same thing that Lilith had been - a new kind of demon, a human who was turned into a demon. I was worried that if Ruby stayed alive and that the demon stuff continued to possess Sam that he'd end up Lucifer's head soldier but thankfully that won't happen. I think it's safe to say that he's going to happy to never use his demon powers again after being a demon's tool and fool.

So team Winchester will be back together with Dean in the lead to battle Lucifer and his legions of demons. Next year is going to ROCK. I have a feeling we'll have very few standalone eps - no way that they can waste eps when Kripke only wants one more season on the show.
