LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Lou Diamond Phillips has joined the cast of Sci Fi Channel’s new original series “SGU: Stargate Universe.”

Rounding out the show’s cast are Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman, both of whom have appeared on “Smallville,” and Ming-Na.

The four join previously cast Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith on the series, which began production last week in Vancouver.

Edgier than its franchise predecessors, “SGU” follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves after they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base is attacked. The survivors, led by Dr. Nicholas Rush (Carlyle), emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.
Phillips will play the ill-fated expedition’s Col. Telford, a lifelong military man.

Ming-Na will play Camile Wray, a human resources executive with the international oversight committee that governs the Stargate program.

Levesque will play the daughter and aide of a U.S. senator, and Huffman will play a field medic assigned to treat the seriously wounded.

“SGU” is scheduled to launch in October.

OMG I am so freaking excited - I had only been so-so about this show until RIGHT NOW  - I was hoping that we'd get some really awesome hot male lead for the series. I just LOVE Lou Diamond Phillips and have been longing for him to get a hit part! I also LOVE Ming Na and am happy that Alaina got a great full time gig! Guess no more Black Canary on Smallville - that happens though, you snooze you lose SV folks.

*SQUEEE!* I'm going to see Lou Diamond Phillips at COMIC CON!
