Oh they're not going to let Abrams dictate when the film should be released. Disney invested wayyyy too much money into the franchise to not have a new film come PRONTO. 2016 would be the absolute latest.

Abrams is finishing up Trek 2 right now, I'm guessing Trek 3 will get put on the back burner.

I'm sort of on the fence about this mostly because I have my own personal opinions of the man that probably interfere w/ my ability to think rationally about the announcement.

1) I saw JJ at the very first Fringe panel at Comic Con - it was basically 40 minutes of JJ talking NON-STOP about himself. He was in a snit because Paramount hadn't gotten their act together to make space for a Trek panel - or he didn't have footage yet to show - and he REALLY wanted to talk about Trek but couldn't thanks to Fringe being Warner Brothers property. I instantly disliked the man mostly because the few times either John Nobel or Ana Torv or the writers got to talk they actually got me interested in the series (which I ultimately didn't get into.)

2) Star Trek - I liked his casting, I love, love, LOVE Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Karl Urban, and Zoe Saldana - Pine grew on me and I liked him as Kirk. Not being a fan of the original series I really didn't care what he did to the story - blowing up Vulcan? Sure, whatever. I though Bana was extremely weak, but that wasn't my problem with the film. JJ sold me all of the way until they were all standing on the bridge - and possibly watching Vulcan being obliterated - I don't exactly remember where it was in the film - but they all started saying "Oh my god - we've just been kicked into an alternate dimension" or alternate reality or whatever. I could only think WTH???? Nobody talks like that - ever - in sci-fi.

Then I realized why he did it. He wrote that conversation in there for the non-sci-fi masses who'd wander into the theater w/ their popcorn and who expect everything to be explained to them.

That was the moment that solidified my extreme irritation and annoyance w/ Abrams.

There are a few flip sides with him. First he has said that he loves Star Wars and that he got into filmmaking because of SW. In the press release he was very complimentary to George, so I'm giving him a sliver of doubt in his favor.

Abrams is great at casting. Idiots in the press are already casting people from his earlier endeavors into the parts but I don't see that happening. When he cast LOST most of those people were ones who no one had ever heard of before and many have gone on to have very solid careers thanks to his discovering them. He discovered Jennifer Garner, Keri Russell, and more. The Trek cast also weren't all marquee names at the time of their casting, so this gives me hope that he will cast the people best for the parts, not because someone is "popular" and wants to be in the movie.

The final good thing is once the script is ready to go, with the timeline in place for Disney wanting the movie released, Abrams won't be able to do much of anything beyond cast, shoot, and finish the film.

Oh, wow, this is all surprising to me. I hear you about the casting of this movie. It's critical. I don't want an 'it' girl of the day or the 'it' guy. It would be so wrong.

I agree, he got it right with Star Trek, he truly did. I knew these actors and had faith they would be Ok. But I don't remember that scene. I'll look for it.

Oh, please no 'Lost' cast members, maybe one but no more than that. I truly enjoyed Lost, but it drove me crazy too, but I stuck with it until the end! *sigh, cried like a baby*

I enjoyed Fringe up until Season 4. I dropped it because it became utterly ridiculous. I did watch the last season, but it didn't impress me. I DVR'd the series finale, haven't watched it yet. I will at some point, I guess.

That is something to hear about Comic Con. He needs to chill. Star Wars has some pretty tough fans. Just look what they did to the prequels, which I didn't hate, btw. I enjoyed most of it.

I truly hope you're right about not pushing back the release date. *crosses fingers*
