My top 5 Favorite ‘Ships of all Time

1) Anakin/Padme - Anakin and Padme are my all time favorite ship. Even though I’ve dropped off of the STAR WARS fandom radar, they still hold a special place in my heart. I was a huge fan of the original SW films and never gave Luke and Leia’s parents much of a second thought other than wondering about the final duel in which Anakin becomes Darth Vader. Since I never built anything up in my mind, I was happy to go along w/ whatever Pappa George gave us.

I love how they both were looking for something to complete a hole in each other, found it in the right person in the wrong time with the wrong circumstances that all fought against any chance of them ever being happy. Both were flawed in falling in love with each other - but love never makes sense. I love classic fantasy stories w/ the warrior falling in love w/ the aristocratic woman - Anakin/Padme were those parts in the prequels. Their tragic love story just helped to make Luke and Leia’s struggles that much richer when reviewing the final films and made Anakins last words to his son all of the more tear jerking. I’ve got essays written on them on my website.

2) Richard/Kahlan - I haven’t read the entire series of Terry’s books which might make it seem odd that I’m completely ga-ga for this couple. I had to stop reading the books because Terry lives to utterly torture my favorite characters and his readers by giving us the most horrific reasons that Richard/Kahlan could be torn apart from each other. I semi-hope that we only get around 5-7 seasons of the series so that the writers are forced to chop out a lot of the god awful gut wrenching stuff from the middle of the series that left me throwing the books aside not to pick them up again.

So if I haven’t read all of the books how can I love them? Well because they are by far, some of the best written original characters in fiction. Kahlan and Richard are so vividly and beautifully written that you know these 2 individuals inside and out. You literally spend your time wanting to scream at the pages when they’re about to do something stupid (which sadly is quite often.) Richard and Kahlan are frustrating to ship, not only do we have the whole Confessor’s power soul sucking ability from her lover, but there’s always SOMETHING that comes along and keeps them apart from each other. This is terrible because they LOVE each other. I don’t know that I’ve read anything where you really get that 2 people so blindly, passionately, and deeply love. They have that whole epic love thing going on yet you never feel that in the books, they are just ordinary people w/ extraordinary gifts and extraordinarily annoying problems (like magic gone amuk) that continually get in the way from them being happy together.

I never thought I’d get a chance to see Richard and Kahlan brought to life and I’m so thrilled with how they are being portrayed on LEGEND OF THE SEEKER. They are the pure embodiment of what I remember of their characters from the books and after recently rereading WFR - my memory didn't fail me. We don’t get the long internal monologues from the books that tell us how deeply Richard/Kahlan love each other on the show, instead we’re given burning glances and unrequited longing. The UST is nearly unbearable at times and makes it scream worthy at the TV…it’s just fabulous.

3) Arthur/Guenievere - I discovered King Arthur when I was in Jr High and was staying at my grandparents one summer. I happened upon a copy of Mary Stewart’s THE CRYSTAL CAVE, devoured that entire series and was hooked on the classic story. I consider myself to be a King Arthur snob because frankly so many tellings are bland and unoriginal. I hold all retellings to the level of the Mary Stewart books. In them, Mordred was not evil, Guenievere loved her husband..DEEPLY and Arthur…oh Arthur was a MAN. Arthur was a warrior of the like that we have really only seen once on screen and that was in the recent film KING ARTHUR film. I think I fell so deeply in love with GLADIATOR because that opening sequence Germania battle with Maximus leading his battle charge was always how I envisioned Arthur as the strategist and warrior. “What we do in life…echoes in eternity…” that’s the kind of phrase and power that Maximus has over his men that just reminds me of ARTHUR.

In the Mary Stewart books, Guenievere did love Arthur, but his constantly leaving her alone to save Britain and the stress of her not being able to produce an heir finally wore down on her and she turned to another for comfort. There’s a lovely relationship in the books w/ her and Mordred who she takes on as her own son as well. Both of them worship Arthur and are always terrified that they are going to end up somehow betraying him and breaking his heart.

Other tellings that I enjoy are The Quenievere Queen of the Summer Country novels by Rosalind Miles, TH White’s The Once and Future King, and the fabulous books The Child Queen & The Queen of Camlot by Nancy McKenzie. Film wise, the only Arthurian adaptations that I’ve enjoyed were the MERLIN mini-series that had aired back on ABC, the sci-fi mini-series for THE MISTS OF AVALON (the book annoys me because of how Marion Zimmer Bradley depicted Guenievere,) and KING ARTHUR…nobody is hotter than Clive Owen as Arthur...NOBODY. This all being said, I'm curious to see the new BBC production MERLIN...I might wait until Summer though, I don't know if I can take having another fantasy saga to pine for.

4) Lois/Clark - It’s a good thing that I love tragedy because in order to be a fan of Lois/Clark on SMALLVILLE, you have to be willing to bear heartache around every corner because the freaking show writers and producers refuse to ever let these 2 actually develop into the couple that they’ve been for over 70 years in comics, tv, and movies.

I positively LOVE Tom Welling and Erica Durance and Clark and Lois. The two of them perfectly embody everything that I love about Superman and Lois Lane. Tom is, well, drop dead gorgeous, manly (when they let him be on the show) sweet, caring, and sarcastic…around Lois. Lois is a mess, she’s sarcastic, she’s no-nonsense, she’s a whirlwind who constantly pulls Clark out of his funks and brings joy and purpose to his otherwise stagnant life. When they’re together on screen and allowed to really play off of each other, Lois and Clark are amazingly entertaining. Clark gets bumbly because he starts acting completely unlike himself - snark, snark, snark! Lois yanks Clark around like he’s on a leash. Oh they are FUN to watch. They’re also wonderful because they deeply care for each other and can get through to each other when no one else does. They get each other which makes them just fabulously fantastic.

But…there’s the problem of Lana aka Blahna always getting in the way to mess with things which unfortunately includes this season where we thought that we might actually finally be seeing real Lois/Clark developing and WHAM she has to return to throw everything off track. Grrrrrrr. Well at least Lana will only be around for 4 eps and after that it looks like the road’s wide and clear for Clois to finally begin…just in time for Clark to get stomped by Doomsday. [Zedd]Nothing is ever easy.[/Zedd]

5) Elizabeth Bennet/ Mr. Darcy - Briget Jones/Marc Darcy - All of the best chick flicks and stories are based off Lizzy and Mr. Darcy. I usually have to pull out my BBC Pride and Prejudice DVDS at least once a year to rewatch. I love Collin Firth as Mr. Darcy - there’s just no one to better portray the stuffy hero of Jane Austen’s classic love-story. The very fact that they got him to play Marc Darcy in BRIDGET JONES DIARY just made those 2 films that much sweeter. I love the Keira retelling also, although the guy who they got as Darcy was forgettable.

Elizabeth was so way ahead of her time when she was written. The story opens w/ the ridiculous assumption that every woman must be in search of a man in order to make her life complete. Lizzy thought about love…for others. She was the first real feminist in literature with a free spirit. She did what she wanted and refused to bow down to social constraints. She could care less what others thought of her which drove Mr. Darcy crazy considering he was all about social fronts.

Darcy’s going out of his way to help save the public face of Bennet’s name when Wickham created a scandal by fleeing with and bedding Lizzy’s unwed youngest sister Lydia proved him to be not only the true nobelman of his breeding, but a man who was willing to do everything to help save face to the woman who he loved. He even went out of his way to cover up the fact so that she wouldn’t know. So much for pride, eh? *Le Sigh* Because Lizzy never calculated or tried to get the best man, ultimately she landed the best one out there.
