The lead up to Comic Con begins with the mad rush for tickets. This sounds really easy but it’s become more like getting Red Sox tickets. The hotel reservations is ten times worse and looking at places on VRBO is easier. Then reselling unused tickets which ends with the scheduling being dolled out two weeks before the con.
Over the years the convention website has gotten considerably more detailed and easier to use. They even started allowing pre-ordering of t-shirts so no more lines like the ones I complained about in 2011. The introduction of My Schedule through sched.com is one of the better additions to the con. No more dogeared newspaper pages looking for panels! It’s all at your finger tips on your tablet or smart phone!
Unfortunately, that’s if the SDCC Comic-Con and the SDCC Comic-Con Sched App were updated. In this day and age you live and die by the app. Neither of which have been updated in a dog’s age. Something I hope was just overlooked but with a week to go it’s looking like we won’t be seeing a proper working SDCC App with sched.com integration until 2014.
And then there’s the giant elephant in the room that Emerald City Comic Con is streaming their panels through FlipOn
Stream it and they will pay.
So let’s take a look at things going on after the cut.
I’m focusing on panels regarding writing this year like I did in 2011 and checked off the Ballroom 20 panels and Hall H. You see all the overlap? This is good thing since I can always divert to another panel or walk the dealer’s room. The good news is I’m staying a block away from the convention center thanks to vrbo so my ten block walk back to the lovely Mudville Flats is no longer needed.
The great news is there are a lot of writing panels. Panels on YA, Steampunk, Science Fiction, Agents, Random Penguin (the one merger where it would have made a great name). I hate to say I’ve been drifting away from comics for a while. There are few exceptions: Powers, Gold Digger, Saga, Questionable Content, PVP and Penny-Arcade that’s about it. So a lot of the comic panels aren’t my thing. I’m happy to see Fred Perry’s Gold Digger getting two panels. I’m unhappy to see they have to remind us I’ve been collecting this comic for 22 years but I digress.
I’m hope there will be more than 3 people including myself going to his 22 years panel. It’s a great book if you’re into D&D, science fiction, urban fantasy, magic, robots, Monty Python, Transformers and such. The evolution of his art is great to watch.
Thankfully, the writing panels don’t overlap that much except towards the end.
I did the Tron: Legacy Panel and enjoyed it in 2011 so the Agents of SHIELD panel is smack dab in the middle of Friday and probably going to be a bear to get into but it’s going to be worth it. The Dark Horse Joss Whedon panel would have been nice but I just don’t see it happening.
Aisha Tyler’s Girl on Guy Podcast and Nerdist Podcast are going on Saturday. And Matt Smith is coming to Nerdist. This means no need to wait in line for Hall H on Sunday. I’m happy to see they put the Doctor Who and Community Panels in Hall H are right after each other.
I’d love to try and see The World’s End sneak preview but after 2011′s attempt to stand in line for Scott Pilgrim and bag checks, it might be best just wait. Meanwhile during all this I have to see Pacific Rim, Red 2 and RIPD.
This brings up an excellent question then: when to dress up as Captain Reynolds?
I’ve been silent on this for a while since I’m still waiting for the gun belt to show up. It’s been made. But the closer we get the closer I get fidgety. I’m thinking Friday or Saturday and then mail it all back on Sunday at the Kinkos in the convention center.
And, yes, I’m bringing the hat. We nerds catch on fire when we’re exposed to our enemy: The sun.
Here’s hoping the tropical storm Chantal goes to the east of us next week.
