Tropic Thunder (mini review, minor spoilers)...
Tropic Thunder is this years Cable Guy.
It is by no means a laugh out loud comedy like most. It's a Dramedy. A movie within a movie about actors, Stiller, Black, Downey Jr, Brandon Jackson and Jay Baruchel filming a bloated Vietnam movie by first time director played by Steve Coogan based on a book.
The pot shots it takes at Hollywood and it's stars are dead on. The fake trailers ala Grindhouse are perfect and the overall direction of the movie is fine.
The flack it's received from the portrayal of Stiller's Tugg Speedman playing a mentally challenged character named Jack in a ficitional movie entitled Simple Jack is without merit, imho. The viral marketing that included a fake website (has now since been taken down) for said movie was done in poor taste, tho.
Oh and, Tom Cruise steals the entire movie. I would have named Thunder his Pulp Fiction but then we have that turd of a movie Valkyrie coming out sometime this year or next.
Overall, it's worth seeing.
