Of course Google doesn't care what the U.N. thinks, it's an American company, after all. . .

Well, I have to admit I was surprised. Google did the right thing, and now no longer lists Taiwan as part of China. I'd read a lot of people saying this was pointless. That is, trying to debate the issue of Taiwan's sovereignty with the folks at Google. I'd seen a lot pixels devoted to it.

Personally, last week was the second time in my life I'd written a letter of protest over anything. I doubt--hell, I don't even entertain the notion, that my letter had anything to do with Google's decision. But I went ahead and sent them a thank you letter, anyhow.

To Whom It May Concern--

I'd written a letter to you guys last week regarding your identification of Taiwan as a province of China on your map service. I was urging you to reconsider this and, earlier today, I found out that you did.

I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your company's change of heart.

You have always tried to live up to the ideal of being a business with a conscience. I think that what you've done is really cool. I have lived in Taiwan for a year and half, now. I know many people here who appreciate the credit you've given them. They are happy not to be identified with a tyranny.

Anyway, best of luck in all that you do.
