Title: Don't Go Out With Her
Rating: PG
Pairing(s): Chlark; mentions of Clana
Spoilers: General season 5.
Disclaimer: If I owned Smallville, Clark and Chloe would have gotten together a freaking long time ago. So, yeah, whatever.
Summary: Clark's heart is in serious danger... and Chloe is the only one who can see it coming.
Notes: This song's been almost consuming me for the past few days, and what with current spoilers and such, it has really started to eat at my brain, so I decided to do something with it. This will end up having a companion piece in the near future.
She hated watching them together.
And it wasn't just because she was jealous.
She knew Lana would eventually break his heart. And she knew that it would shatter him.
*Baby, your heart is in serious danger
Don't go out with her*
She began to wonder if she was right only a few months later when Lana started demanding sex, something Clark wasn't sure he could give.
Discussing it with him made her sick to her stomach, and made her feel like Lana was just using him for whatever she could get.
*She'll lead you on
And treat you like a stranger
Don't go out with her*
She tried her hardest to change the subject, and hinted that she didn't want to discuss it, and he didn't seem to understand.
She didn't want to blurt out that she'd never do that to him. She loved him enough to respect his wishes.
*You need someone like me
Who'll love you endlessly*
When he told her that he'd proposed to Lana, she felt her heart crumble. Just when she'd seemingly pieced it back together, it crumbled yet again, so easily.
Didn't he understand? She knew, deep down in heart, that she could be so much better for him.
*My love is everything you'll ever need
I'll start by holding your heart close to me*
She hated to leave him there alone, but Lois kept urging her to. She didn't want to, but Lois was about to drag her away anyway.
She hated what she'd just seen. First, Lana had dumped him, or demanded "a break", whatever that meant, and now she'd abandoned him at father's grave. If she really loved him at all, she would have wanted to stay. She wouldn't have so limply taken his hand and then suddenly dropped it.
Lana obviously didn't love him. She probably never really had.
*I know just what she'll do
Her kind is never true*
So he'd finally, officially ended things with Lana.
She wasn't sure what to think, or how to feel.
And then, after he'd seen Lex and Lana together, and thrown such a bit fit about her knowing, he'd came to her, and apologized... and then said she had no idea how it felt to see someone you loved with someone else.
She was forced to hide her pain. Because she knew. Oh, God, how she knew. She'd been doing it for years now.
*I know a place where love is for certain
Don't go out with her*
Only two weeks later, she stood nearly in the same spot, and looked up at Clark in horror as she realized that the world might actually be coming to an end. She didn't want to admit it, but she was terrified. And all the thoughts spilling in her head only made it worse.
And then he'd saved her life. For the millionth time. Seconds passed. Words were exchanged. And then he needed to go.
But she stopped him.
She stopped him to kiss him goodbye. To show him just how much she loved him.
To her surprise, he kissed her back. He seemingly returned the feeling.
And then, as he left for real that time, leaving her standing there alone in the darkness, she prayed that they'd both make it. That they would survive. And that that stolen moment would only be the beginning of Clark Kent's wake-up call.
*When it's all said and done,
I'll be your only one...*
