DOCTOR WHO: "Amy's Choice" (5x07)

A deceptively simple, character-driven episode that at times strains credulity to the limit -- but there's a very good reason for that, as we find out at the end.

And I loved it LIKE PIE.

I'm not fond of the unrequited love thing either, but the dynamic here is so different from anything we've seen before. Rose wanted an Awesome Boyfriend and a mortgage. Martha wanted an equal partner (indeed, a fellow Doctor) with whom to Do Meaningful Stuff. Amy, however, is running away from commitment, not toward it. When the Doctor tried to explain why he couldn't get seriously involved with her, she actually mocked him for it -- because serious means Rory, and marriage, and she wants to run around the universe having adventures with a man who won't (indeed can't) tie her down. She's not "in love" with the Doctor; she's not pinning her future on him. Her idea of the ideal relationship with the Doctor is Friends With Benefits -- which to me is sad and damaged too, but in a wholly different way from what we've seen before.

But the lovely thing is that "Amy's Choice" addresses that issue as well, and I don't think it'll come up (or at least not in the same way) again. In fact, if anybody's in danger of suffering Unrequited Love at this point, IMO it's the Doctor, not Amy. And that's refreshing.

Ooo, yes. I look forward to seeing how it is handled then. I do have a lot of faith in Moffat based on his other eps.

So, I finally got the chance to see Amy's Choice and I loved it too. I am back to very pro-Amy now. Like you said, I loved how she did chose Rory, and I loved her humor, and the fake labor and all of it. And you are exactly right about the insights into the Dr's persona being much better handled this way. Very deft.

Can't wait to watch the rest of the season so I can read your post on THE PANDORICA OPENS!
