My family is sluggish and frequently complains of being tired, and both hubby and I are ten pounds heavier than we want to be. So yesterday I signed up to
FormulaZone and planned a week's worth of 40-30-30 menus. We're going to try this for a month, I think... I've done
The Zone before and it worked well for me -- in fact I'd still be doing it if I hadn't got lazy and lost the habit -- so I'm pretty sure it will help at least somewhat.
The unfortunate thing, however, is that buying protein powder, all-natural peanut butter, and some of the other staples needed for the recipes I chose nearly doubled our grocery bill for this week -- yikes! Mind you, they're the kind of things that I wouldn't have to buy very often at all -- I expect most of them to last for the next three to six months. But still, the initial outlay is rather daunting!
Also, I have already had a recipe disaster, with the PB&J Muffins (although hubby assures me they're not that bad, and charitably ate a couple this morning), which thanks to the addition of the protein powder turned out very springy and dry, rather like eating muffin-shaped blocks of foam. They need warming up in the microwave plus a little extra butter and jam to be really edible, I think. Later on this week I'm going to try a different muffin recipe which uses fruit and more liquid, and perhaps they'll be easier to take. If not, though, no big deal -- I'll just substitute smoothies made with the protein powder. At least they can't be too dry.
My crisper is totally stuffed with vegetables and fruits now, so at the very least, we'll be eating healthy this week...
