Summary: Agon comes forward about the fight with Vincent.
He had been in doubt about waiting for shit to happen or just come forward with it to have it over with. Agon knew he was having the disc with the backup-images of that glorious moment, but he decided not to use it. The thing was somewhere under his matress and it would stay there. That conscience of his didn't want to put that stupid Sohma twerp in danger.
Maybe he could just be the wise man and come clean about this before it would be found out and he would be blamed for reporting it too late. Whatever would happen, he would get blamed for something and he hadn't seen Valentine anywhere since the entire fight.
Agon also didn't want to worry Shinra at all so the best way was to just report this to Hojo and get it over with. He'd probably would get kicked out or fired and it fucking scared the shit out of him. Why could he be bothered anyways? Why the fuck did this bother him?
That's why he appeared at Hojo's office right after lunch. Very annoyed, very stressed out and his cheek was still a black and blue throbbing mess.
Sighing he knocked on the door with one hand as the other slid into the pocket of his slacks.
"Mr. Hojo? You have a minute?"
Sephiroth, being a wise man, had secluded himself in his office with the administrative work that had to be done in Basch's place. He'd been nearly finished and close to leaving early when an unexpected knock came at the door. Having finished with his meetings awhile ago, there wasn't anybody in the building he'd expected to come knocking. With a sigh, the silver-haired man pulled off his reading glasses and sat them down on top of the paper he'd been reading. He glanced over the black couch against the wall by the window longingly--but he knew he couldn't pretend he wasn't there.
"Come in," he called wearily. Hearing himself called "Mr. Hojo" made him wince. He'd have to speak to whoever was at fault about that. He wasn't ready to sound old yet--after all, his first child hadn't even been born.
The thought brought a small smile to his face. He had yet to tell any of his coworkers about it formerly and the only ones who knew were the ones that had read his journal. The ex-General wondered if they'd think it weird, himself starting a family. Certainly, anybody would take it better than Kadaj. The thought of his youngest brother made Sephiroth frown, and he looked up expectantly toward the door instead. He hoped whoever was there could distract him from his thoughts--Sephiroth had been quietly worrying about his younger brother since the news had first been broken.
A little part inside of him had hoped that Hojo would turn him away, telling him that he had no time for any of that and Agon frowned deeper when the one behind the big office door had told him to come in. And he couldn't help blaming this damn city and their damn inhabitants for fucking up his entire mind frame.
Kongou Agon should not care.
But despite all of this he opened the door, closing it with the heel of his foot before walking further into the office. It seemed that Hojo was busy with administrative work, hence the shitload of papers around him. Still, there was some kind of leftover smile on his face.
Was that idiot smiling to himself or something?
"Aaa...I can come back later, if you're busy." Talking still wasn't the best thing either with a bruised cheek and he rubbed it softly when a faint dull pain shot through his lower jaw.
"I'm not too busy," Sephiroth answered. His frown turned into a bigger frown as he noted the bruise on Agon's cheek. Had somebody finally snapped and let a punch fly? They were all a little high-strung right now, and waiting for Rufus to come in and kick all of their asses couldn't help anybody's mood.
Bright green eyes narrowed as he looked at the much younger man. "What happened to your face?" he asked. If Agon was getting into fights at the office, he was going to have to face Rufus' wrath in letting him go. Honestly, Sephiroth couldn't see at all why the blonde was so attached to this one. So what if he'd come and visited Rufus a lot--it seemed the blonde had forgotten all the trouble that Agon had caused in the first place.
Actually, that was quite a difficult question to answer properly. The way the other was narrowing his eyes already told Agon that he shouldn't have come to this office in the first place. Maybe he should just quit and go. He was far from Hojo's favourite person. What the hell...Hojo probably would be more on Vincents hand in this one. "...Got in a fight..." he finally said, straightening his back as he put his other hand in the left pocket of his pants. "That's why I'm here".
Then he was silent again, trying to find a way to bring this in the best way possible. He stared at the painting in the office instead of Sephiroth's face.
"I'll get fired for this. So I bet it's better to just say it to your face instead of wait until the other party involved comes here to whine... Because you fucking believe his word over mine because he's my superior on the department and I'm like a little troublemaker who doesn't please him enough."
Finally Agon's face turned back, dark eyes settling on the others face. "So...now I came to be the fucking bigger man in this thing and get it over with."
So it had been a fight with another Turk. Sephiroth had a feeling he could guess exactly the one. He didn't like Agon's assumption that he'd automatically fire the other one for it. Vincent, as most of them knew, could have a temper about him from time to time. For whatever reason though, they seemed to not like each other at all. A solution would have to be found, or he'd have to fire them both.
"You fought with Vincent," he stated, sounding rather unsurprised. "I'm sure you can imagine that it doesn't come as a shock."
Sephiroth gestured to the seat in front of his desk. Despite all the problems Agon had caused, Sephiroth felt him a valuable enough asset to Shinra to at least hear the man out. "Have a seat and tell me the whole story."
So much for going home early.
"...It escalated in the training room during firearm training. I probably pissed him off by not wanting him to get his hands on me when he wanted to correct my pose or something and I refused to having to wait for this training again. I actually expected him to storm off or something... we got in a fight"
The footballplayer closed his eyes, thinking. Would it be wise to tell that Valentine put a gun against his head or fired it eventually. Or all the things he said about things he could NOT have known? Or that when the moment came where Agon tried to walk away from it, Valentine pulled him right back in. He could not take Yukari's... safety away like that. Fuck knew why, but he couldn't.
"That's it."
It was a brief explanation, and not exactly a detailed one. There was one important detail that Agon had left out, and Sephiroth needed to know.
"Who threw the first punch? What else should I know?" he asked. He'd have to pull the security footage and watch it after he'd talked to both of them about this. If Agon was being honest, Sephiroth would think of him a little more highly.
Of course Hojo could easily retrace the truth. Heck, everything got filmed by the security cameras. It even had fucking sound. If Agon would lie, he'd hang. But he considered it for a long time, trying to take everything into account. If Hojo needed security footage he could cause problems for Sohma.
Valentine had been the one who punched first and that same Valentine was the one who kept provoking him, kept on pushing him over the edge. It didn't meant he was innocent in this situation, a lot of things had led to this outburst. On the other hand, his head was gonna roll much earlier than Vincent's one.
"Valentine did. Not exactly a punch... he... pointed a gun against my head and asked me for a good reason why he shouldn't pull the trigger."
In his ears his voice was sounding strangely monotone. "...He kicked me afterward, then I moved to punch his face... broke his nose there..."
There was a short silence before he opened his mouth again.
"But fuck... the trash has a pregnant woman at home who I don't feel like upsetting. If you have to fire someone... fire me. Fucking trash... he has a family..."
Vincent was going to die. If this was true, he was going to kill the man himself. What the hell had he been thinking, threatening a subordinate like that? Even Agon was a little annoying, it was easy to see that he'd been trying to shape up. Vincent had been out of line with that, unless there was something Agon wasn't telling him.
There was the matter of his wife and child, Sephiroth supposed, but Yukari was a big girl. She could fend for herself, though she'd probably hunt him down and kill him in return. Death by high heels wasn't something he wanted to experience with his own child on the way. Well, what the hell was he supposed to do about this? No matter the punishment, he'd have to be sure that it was fair. Both were at fault--Vincent more than Agon, at the moment.
The frown on his face had turned to anger and then to exasperation and frustration. The fact that both of them seemed suddenly bad about behaving had put him in a very, very difficult spot. He couldn't have both of them constantly causing tension and trouble. Clearly, this needed to be worked out.
Somehow.
"I hope I won't have cause to fire anybody," Sephiroth finally answered after a few moment of silence while he thought. "The waste of life would be too tremendous. However, I think that this is something I need to take to the President after I speak to Vincent and watch the security footage." He worried it would be too much too soon for Rufus, but Sephiroth wasn't going to make such a large decision alone.
He noticed Hojo's frustrated look when he leaned back, crossing his arms. The words coming from the others mouth were different than the ones he'd been expecting. "...Don't bother Mr. Shinra with this." Agon tried to fucking not feel this time. "...Look, I tried... I fucked up. I snapped, I went at him..."
Why didn't he want to see Valentine burn like the horrible piece of shit he was?
"The tension will always stay... so fire me. He had proved his fucking worth to the company, right?"
It was like thinking the one thing but saying the opposite. Suddenly Agon realized how much he was fucking up when he tried to care and put people's feelings in concideration. Everything had been wrong from the point he started to fucking care.
"I shouldn't care about this."
Sephiroth listened to him, and cocked his head to the side a little. Agon didn't seem to be making much sense. He had been trying. Perhaps some positive feedback was in order.
"Unfortunately," he started, "I have no choice but to take this matter higher. Pointing a gun at a fellow Turk is unacceptable." Sephiroth wiped the angry expression off his face and leaned forward a little.
"I do not think this is entirely your fault. And just because Vincent has been here a long time doesn't mean he can't make mistakes worthy of punishment. It is clear you both messed up." A small smile turned up the corners of Sephiroth's lips. "You're coming to me, however, I do see as proof of you trying. I appreciate your forwardness, and rest assured, Vincent and I will be having words.
After all, I see no need to kill you when you're making good progress here. So tell me, Agon, why it is you shouldn't care that you have been wronged?" He leaned back in his seat again, studying the other calmly.
A good progress?
Not that Agon never received praise... Heck, he used to get even praised for a fart. But this was a good thing?
"...Yukari and I... we're friends. I don't have any... intention with her besides... friendship. And I believe... friendship works that you don't want to upset your friend. That's right, aaa? Mr. Shinra and I... I guess... I think I can call him a friend. And that's the same.
I've tried to walk away... but I snapped. If Valentine gets fired... it'll hurt Yukari. And... Mr. Shinra will be dissappointed. Somehow... I feel fucking bad about this. Believe me, I want to see Valentine squirm like the fucking worthless shit he is, but... he's Yukari's guy."
Agon stared at the floor. He had been wronged, he knew it. "And...I would refuse to take orders from a... shithead like Valentine. And refusing orders is refusing to work."
Vincent wouldn't believe a word of this. The only reason Sephiroth felt he was believing this was because he was right there and Agon sounded sincere--and his eyes. Sephiroth had been in charge of enough men to know when one was being completely honest with him.
"How do you think Yukari would feel if you were killed? Perhaps it would destroy their relationship, or I'd end up having to fire Vincent anyway," he said at long last. "Don't be so quick to throw your own life away, Agon. Think of all the people who would be upset over your loss."
Eyes narrowed as Agon processed the others words. Everything had consequences. And it was completely retarded that he was doubting if people would be upset over his loss. He was Kongou fucking Agon and the entire world should be upset when he would pass away.
"...I don't want Yukari to be upset... Or Mr. Shinra for that matter. Aaa... if I was interested in the holidays they'd probably be the people I'd invite over. And maybe Sohma. Can you believe it...? I actually get along with Sohma Kyo? While his boyfriend is the one... I... fell for?"
After a long silence he opened his mouth again, finger moving to point at Sephiroth.
"This town is messing with my head. Aaa...I wish I could erase everything... This is so... fucked up right now. And... I don't want to lose this job. But I can't work with Valentine... I've lost a fucking awful lot this year... so I think I'm prepared to... lose this as well."
He even tried to grin and be light about it. It was ridiculous, like nothing was working anymore.
Sephiroth was nearly gaping for a long time. He'd fallen in love... with Zelos? It was too funny, really, something like that. A chuckle escaped him, and then another, longer laugh. You reap what you sow. Wasn't that the saying?
Calming himself down took but a minute, and he shook the humor away, concentrating on Agon. "Perhaps we can manage to come to come to a compromise then," he suggested. Agon could be moved on Rufus' detail once he'd completed his fire-arms training, but it was clear that somebody else was going to have to give it to him, or be in the room when it was going on. Absently, he pondered asking Yukari to step in and keep an eye on the two, but he didn't feel it right to put a pregnant woman in danger. Perhaps Rufus, then, or Tseng could teach him.
Time like this made Sephiroth wish he knew a little more about guns than he did. Guns weren't that difficult, but it had been years since he'd had to use his rifle, and his handgun wasn't often called for either. He preferred his Masamune.
"So wipe that grin off your face," he continued. "I have no plans to release you to an easy death. If there's nothing else to discuss, you can back to being useful."
Somehow it was fun to hear the other say he had to wipe a grin of his face while he had been the one almost chuckling at him because of the Zelos-comment.
And actually, looking back on it, it was a fucking hoot to begin with. Zelos was a fucking porn-star, and all porn-stars do is acting.
"...Aaa... yea... I fell for the guy who's dating your ex." Agon drawled as his mind suddenly made that click. "Funny thing is... however I look at it... there's still a part of me who wants to travel back in time and restore it so I'd be the one having Wilder. It's annoying he ignores me, he got what he wanted... right? I've set everything fucking straight... and all I get is his fucking cold shoulder."
After those words he relaxed again, realizing he wasn't gonna lose his job over this.
"...Aaa...so, I can go back to work?" There was a tone of disbelief in his voice, he couldn't help it. Because in this part of Japan, nothing went as Kongou Agon wanted things to go.
"To be fair," Sephiroth clarified, "We weren't exactly dating." It had been more of an office fling, and while they had cared for each other, Sephiroth couldn't stand the way Kyo couldn't make up his mind about anything. It was annoying, and he wasn't going to be "the other woman" in a relationship with anybody.
It didn't matter, he supposed. Sephiroth was happy now.
"Go back to work," he said, "and get as much done as you can. Turn your reports in to me, and I'll pass them along to Vincent so you don't have to butt heads at all."
Green eyes narrowed as he took a more serious tone. "Tonight I'll watch the security footage, and I'll speak to Vincent about this tomorrow, even if he's not supposed to come in. If you're lying to me, I won't hesitate to recommend to Rufus that you be killed, do you understand?" While he doubted Agon was lying, he wanted to make sure he was aware of the consequences.
That sounded fair and Agon got from his chair, groaning a bit when another rush of dull pain went through his stomach to his back and down to his butt. "There aren't much of reports I can turn in, I'm still busy with going through the ones I did and putting them into the archives. Ugh... so fucking boring..."
Finally he dusted off his slacks and straightened his back.
"I'm not lying. Aaa...he fired a bullet as well..." Agon pointed at a small burnmark on his cheek. "...Just went past me... thank fucking god he has good aim."
After a long silence Agon shrugged his shoulders. "Thank you, I guess..." After that he smirked a bit. "Aaaa...Sohma and you would make quite a ridiculous couple anyways. Congrats with the brat on the way..."
Silently he was happy he didn't had to use the backup he got from Kyo. It was nice to know he didn't put the little twerp in danger. Somehow, right now...he had for more respect for Sohma then he ever had for Wilder. And that shit, counted for something.
Sephiroth had been near a chuckle at Agon's complaint of his boring task, but hearing that Vincent had fired a bullet at Agon pissed him off again. "I see. I'll deal with him harshly then. Holding a gun to your head is bad enough, but firing..." What the hell had gotten into his friend?
"Thank you," he said, trying not to beam too much at the mention of the baby on the way. Sephiroth hadn't said much about it at work, but when it was brought up, it took a good deal of effor not to break into a huge grin that would undoubtedly frighten away the other employees for good.
Agon contemplated it for a long time if he would tell the other about Valentine firing the bullet. But heck, he'd find out anyways when he would look at the security video. "I haven't been innocent either... I tried to choke him at the end. As I said... I snapped... It had been a fucking long time ago since I did, though... I guess when Valentine snaps, he goes batshit insane."
And he could not believe he was actually saying all of this. He wondered what the fuck had gone into his head to make him admit he wasn't innocent in this situation. Vincent deserved to BURN and a side of him kind of liked it to hear Mr. Hojo wouldn't take this lightly on the other.
"Aaa...you're welcome..." Once again Agon stretched his muscles, yawning this time and slowly spinning on his feet to go.
That would have to be taken into consideration, but Sephiroth would have snapped at Vincent as well. "Ill take both sides and the video into consideration, and let you know if there will be any punishment for you as well," Sephiroth said. That sounded fair.
But now it seemed Agon was ready to leave. He was fine with that.
It looked like the afternoon's workload had just doubled. Biting back a sigh of exasperation, he left a note in his journal for Vincent to see, and a text to his cell phone for good measure, and went back to getting things done.
With a little luck, he'd be home in time to tell Kadaj good night.
