CHAPTER 1: MEETING
Finally, it was the first day of classes for S. T. High School. A fresh start for freshmen and a year filled with memories for the seniors. Akira’s already in her senior year so power was all hers. Classes were about to start and a lot of students from the lower years were crowding the corridors. What was the commotion about? She then realized she was almost late.
“Move it!”
After passing through all those students, she was able to reach her classroom. She slowly entered and met eyes with a somewhat familiar person. He smiled at her softly
“Do I know him?” She asked herself. “Oh well…never mind.” She smiled back.
She approached a random vacant chair and sat in place. She was on time for once. She inwardly celebrated her achievement.
At last it was time to line up on the corridor for the morning ceremony. She then spotted a familiar person.
“Haruhi!” She called as she approached her friend
“Hey!” Haruhi said as she dropped her bag inside the classroom. “I just came. So we’re in the same class again?”
“I guess so…”
“Cool. By the way, have you heard about the news?”
“News?”
“Well, Hey! Say! JUMP is here, in our school!”
“Hey Say What?”
“Hey! Say! JUMP! You don’t know them?”
“Duh…”
“Okay fine. Do you know Ryu Amakusa from the drama Tantei Gakuen Q? You loved the anime version right? You told me you saw the drama too!”
“Ah yes. What about him?”
“See that person? He’s the one who played Ryu! Ryosuke Yamada!” Haruhi said as she pointed Ryosuke.
“Oh… Nice…” Akira said. Ryosuke then gently smiled at them. They smiled back.
The morning ceremony was over, at last. They were now being informed about their seating arrangement in class. There were five rows and six columns, but there were two extra seats at the back. Akira and Ryosuke were seated on the sixth row on the two extra seats on the left. Haruhi was placed in between Daiki and Yuri on the fifth row just in front of Akira and Ryosuke.
“Why am I placed here at the back? I’m one of the smallest students in class!” Akira complained quietly.
“If you need any help at all about what’s written on the board, you can approach me.” Ryosuke offered politely.
“Ah… Thanks…” Akira replied.
“Are you okay?” Daiki asked Haruhi as she was obviously fidgeting with an eraser nervously.
“Umm… Yes… Thank you…” She replied, with a nervous tone in her voice.
“Right…” Daiki said, unconvinced.
“Ah! You guys shouldn’t sit too close to her!” Akira said to Daiki and Yuri.
“Eh?” the boys said in unison.
“She’s not too comfortable with guys. See, it looks like she’s about to faint…”
Daiki and Yuri both moved their chair away from the fidgeting girl.
“Hey! Haru! Look at that teacher’s mouth!” Akira shouted discreetly. Haruhi giggled louder than needed. The teacher noticed this and said:
“Since you were obviously listening, please answer my question.”
“Uhm… I… I mea- I…”
“Yes, we should be good models for the lower year level.” Daiki whispered to her.
“Yes, we should be good models for the lower year level.” She repeated.
“Yes! Good! As I was saying…” the teacher continued. Haruhi went sat back down to her seat and thanked Daiki with an almost inaudible voice. He smiled back.
“Hey, Haru, sorry!” Akira said apologetically.
“It’s fine. I’m used to it.” Haruhi joked.
“Ehh? Even though I was sleeping, I heard the question.” Yuri said drowsily. Haruhi looked down and slowly opened a cutter that seemed to have magically appeared on her hand. Daiki’s eyes widened. Yuri looked away nervously.
The recess bell rang. Before Akira could stand, Haruhi was already beside her.
“Hey, Ryosuke, do you know where the cafeteria is? I can take you there if you want.” Akira said.
“Oh, that would be nice. Thank you so much.” Ryosuke said with a gentle smile.
“Can I come, too?” Daiki asked pulling Yuri with him.
“Yeah, sure.” Akira said. Akira pulled Haruhi with her despite her obvious resistance. The three followed them to the cafeteria.
“Why aren’t you guys eating? Are you on a diet or something?” Daiki asked.
“We don’t eat during recess. I’d barf if I do.” She said while staring blankly at Daiki’s food.
“But... You guys seem---“
“Want me to barf at you? Hm? Hm?” Akira said while poking Daiki.
“I’ll talk to the people over there. The one’s at the very far back part of the cafeteria. Far away from here.” Haruhi said as she stood up. “For short, bye!”
“Hey! Are you going to leave me here?” Akira said as she tried to stop Haruhi.
“Umm...Yes!” She said as she ran to her other friends.
“I have some… assignments to do. ‘kay bye!” Akira said as she ran after Haruhi.
“Assigments? On the first day of classes?” They asked but Akira was already too far.
Dismissal came and everyone was eager to go home. They all approached their lockers to put their books inside. Akira opened hers too and saw a red envelope. She opened it. Written in the letter is:
“While the fates permit, live happily; life speeds on with hurried step, and with winged days the wheel of the headlong year is turned.
~Seneca (5 BC - 65 AD)”
“Huh?” Akira said softly but Haruhi heard her.
“Hey, what’s that?” Haruhi asked. Akira gave her the letter. “Wow. And this is…?”
“I have no idea. It might be a useless prank or something. Oh well, I don’t have time for this” Akira said as she threw the letter at a nearby trash can.
He grinned evilly. “As expected” He said as he closed his locker.
