After living together for about one week, I finally said my final goodbyes to one of my last foreign friends here in Chengdu. Damian. After getting to know him over the course of one semester here in Chengdu, a thought occured to me last night as we dealt with his greedy and horrifically ugly whore of a landlord that tried everything in her power to keep his bloody deposit. As a nice guy he can be, he really does not know how to deal with people in a kind and sensible manner. Yes, he was being ripped off, but I got the sense that he didn't make the situation any easier by making rude remarks, forcing statements for Daisy to translate for him so he could get his way and acting as if he deserved some special treatment just because he was a foreigner. I guess what bugged me most was how he spoke. Now, keep in mind that English is his second language, but most of his remarks, jokes, and wise cracks were derived from American films and I found it totally inappropriate to speak in that manner to others. As well as I got to know him, I've come up with two conclusions: 1) He can be a considerate, honest, and fun guy to be with while...2)He can also be a racist biggot, an inconsiderate pervert and a man who simply does not know where he's going in life.
Oh, the people I've met here in Chengdu! It's been remarkable, really. From my fellow American classmates to my European friends this last semester, it certainly has been a growing experience being exposed to different people.
More later, I have a slight headache and I think lunch will help!
Cheers,
