Tolkien fandom love always comes back around for me, every few months or so. It's hard not to when it was my main fandom for a decade and then, a beloved series of books in childhood before that. Normally the love will stay around for a bit and then taper off. Now, however, it is back in complete and utter full force. I'm re-reading the Silm and parts of the Lost Tales 1 and 2. I'm trying to find some of my fav old fics and a whole new world of First and Second Age based fics (b/c I'm having that urge). (I need some more Fingolfin in my life.) (And all the Ecthelion, all of it.) (And Idril being her amazing self.) (And so on and so forth.)
Honestly though, fandom wise, my greatest hope is that the 2 Hobbit movies will FINALLY make the elvish side of fandom embrace Thranduil and Mirkwood as more than just a setting for their dark!fics and their bastard!Thranduil ideas.
I am not, however, looking forward to movie-verse vs. book-verse fandom wars, rounds 2 and 3.
Quick sidenote though, since I've seen these questions pop-up from a few people new to The Hobbit/Tolkien/only know the trailer and cast listing and who haven't, you know, read or studied most of the HoME:
-A White Council/Meeting of the Wise took place the same time as The Hobbit which is why you see Galadriel in the trailer. It wouldn't be pretty stupid for PJ and co. not to show the meeting of the Wise since the decisions made there directly led to stuff in LotR, esp re: Saruman.
-Legolas, as the son of King Thranduil, Elvenking of Mirkwood, does have a pretty legit reason for being in the film. If he's not acting as regent for his daddy during the Battle of the Five Armies, he sure as hell will be on the field fighting. The reason he's not mentioned in the book itself (and honestly, only 1 or 2 elves outside of Elrond are actually named) is b/c at the time The Hobbit was written, it wasn't really meant to be this lead-up to LotR.
In other news:
-Carrie has to go in for surgery next month to deal with some of the tissue around her trach. She has to go under for it, and I'm silently freaking out and having nightmares already. She's my twin sister and after ALL that happened last year I'm still ultra-sensitive and paranoid about anything dealing with her health that requires her to go near hospitals. Either way, the surgery has to be done and all we can do is hope that everything turns out well. I just have to remember that compared to where she was this time last year, she is amazing. She has hours where she's completely off oxygen, she's getting stronger, and she's gained so much weight back to the point she's getting a little bit of a tummy. I know I haven't talked about it much in general since the major drama but it's just b/c thinking about the shitshow that was my personal life from Jan-April last year, just yeah, let's not go there.
-So, moving on to happier topics now, so to speak: Justified is over for the season and I swear to god that is the only show on tv that, in the space of 5 mins, can make me cringe in horror, laugh my ass off at dark humor, and get teary-eyed at major league family issues.
-Finally got my train tickets for AZ next month. So, as long as work doesn't screw me over, everything should be golden.
